Diet Tips - Desperate To Lose Weight?

I'm not sure it this is the appropriate place to ask, but I see so many good suggestions and ideas on this website.. I thought I'd give this a try. I'm 50 years old, overweight and need help. I know there are many of you out there who have the same issue as myself. About 50 pounds overweight and as I get older, the weight continues to creep. I've been on every diet imaginable in the last 15 years. I've always succeeded in losing, but then gain it all back and then some!

Here is part of my problem, I have a long commute each day (3 hours total), and have a desk job. So I'm tired by the time I get home. I do walk when I can, and have changed my eating habits. I don't eat after 8:00 pm and have cut way back on my sugar intake. Problem is, I'm always hungry, and it's a struggle! I think about food all the time. I just joined up with my local community center and will take yoga classes for one hour on the weekend. Also, aqua aerobics in the evening. Honestly, I'm not sure I have the energy to go to evening classes, but I'm going to try.

Does anyone out there have any useful suggestions? Or, tell me how you lost weight.

It sounds like you're off to a good start - yoga and the evening aerobics. The evening class may be hard at first, but stick with it--it will get easier and be worth the effort. If you have a crockpot you might want to try using that to help with the evening meal.

That way it will be ready when you come home and you won't be tempted to snack. I hope you're drinking plenty of water; that will help with hunger. Also cut-up veggies would be great for the commute. Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress.

Keep sneakers at your desk and go walking at lunch when you can. In bad weather you can climb stairs if your building has several flights. I try to do 15-20 minutes and am trying to increase. Clean up in the bathroom with hand sanitizer towelettes and keep deodorant in your desk drawer. Short, effective workouts and you still have time to eat a healthy brown bag lunch! Good luck!

The best way that I have found to lose weight is with an exercycle. I bought one used for $25.00 and it's the best investment I've ever made. You can start off slow, only going 5 miles or so till your legs get used to the activity.

Gradually increase time spent riding the bike till you're up to 20 miles or more. The weight will come off. Just give it time. I've lost 35 lbs. and kept it off. Good luck!!

Have you had a complete physical? Constant hunger may be a sign of a thyroid problem or other medical problem. Before undetaking any weightloss program, please have a physical and allow your physician to give you the best guidance based onyour health!

Have learned that AM exercise is more beneficial than at the end of the day exercise.

YOU are on the right track, but you do not need a DIET. I was overweight and 49yrs old with a very stressfull job and little energy. I lost 50lb so I know of what i speak. YOU NEED a lifestyle of eating, food is our disease just like anyother only worse. It is tough to stop drinking but you do not have to face it 3 times a day, you HAVE to eat you can not avoid it, so it is harder to control. Same type of weakness in both diseases, need for comfort, lack of control, being a gentle sensitive person etc. Do weight watchers if you can and do it right not your own version. They give you support, they encourage you, other people are going through it with you, AND they want you to eat so you can feel like exercising.

You must have oil in your diet, you must have dairy products, etc. If you get the right foods you WILL NOT BE HUNGRY or feel deprived. You can live your life, you can stop at MICKY D's and have a burger. You will learn portion control and they will support you for a life time, cause some people need the support for a lifetime. You will learn how to eat anything youwant, you just have to learn PORtiON control and limit setting. Cost 11.00 a week right now or 15.00 if you just want to attend one meet a month, (I suggest the weekly ones) but getting your life back is well worth the cost. DO NOT DIET. I wish you all the best.

I'm 29, but also overweight and trying to get myself into shape. My grandmother was diabetic and my mother is borderline diabetic, so I want to avoid that fate if I can! I have slowly lost about 15 pounds, and I've done a few different things to do that. I really started to watch my portions--I do my own home version of the 100 calorie packs you find in stores. I buy my favorite snacks, then come home and open the box, look at what a 100-125 calorie serving size is, then put that amount into baggies. I then put the baggies back into the box so that instead of reaching in and eating way too many crackers, etc., I'm getting only one serving at a time. I also have started to try to stay away from a lot of processed foods, and I read labels at the grocery store before I put something in my cart.

It also helps to eat smaller, more frequent meals. I have a co-worker who is in GREAT shape and also is a part-time aerobics instructor, and she calls this "fueling the furnace" so that your body has the energy it needs and you don't get famished in between meals. I don't have a lot of time or money to exercise (I'm mom to a 2 year old!), but I bought a pedometer and then put my son in his stroller and take long walks. I've gotten to the point where I can walk about 6,500 steps, and I've heard that they recommend 10,000 a day. Hope some of these things help--I know what a struggle it is. Best of luck!

I'm 52 with the same problem. After a simple blood test it was discovered that I am hypothyroid. You might want to get this checked.

You may not lose weight but you will have a little more energy and you will stop gaining.

I am 50 also and have been overweight for years. I like you am desperate! I just read a book I recommend (it helped me) called THE THIN COMMANDMENTS. I realized I am "emotional eating" and it is addressed in there. There are MANY great tips and how to re-think your eating habits when every diet has failed. (hello!) I also was wondering if there is a way to support each other through emails to lose weight, either through you and I, or to start a group?

My doctor has put me on a high fiber low protein diet. he says most people do not take in near enough fiber they should, and that if i can get in about 30 grams of fiber a day and even with NO exercise the weight will come off

I was just like you eight years ago. I lost 53 pounds on Atkins and have stayed in my size 4 outfits ever since. You can eat all you want, but like any diet you need to stay on it for life. When you cheat, you cheat yourself. Friends telling you one bite won't hurt are NOT friends. You have to want to do it, no one can do it for you. I didn't exercise when I was loosing and wouldn't think of NOT exercising now! I wish you the best because it is a matter of health.

go to www.about.com and join the weight loss forum. There you will find a supportive community of people who are also trying to lose weight. You will get all sorts of tips, recipes, etc., plus it's good to have someone to share stories with. I belong and I highly recommend it. Other than that the only thing I can tell you is that there is no magical pill that will make you lose weight. Diet and exercise are the only two things that will do it. Have you tried WeightWatcher's? From what I hear that is an execellent way to get started on the diet part. In order to lose weight you have to burn more calories than you take in. I understand about the being hungry part - - - try drinking lots of cold water to fill you up. Good luck to you.

Drink ice water with at least 6 ice cubes. Ice water forces your system to work harder, thus jump starting your metabolism. Try the Suzanne Sommers Diet, if you want to call it that. Or try 8 Minutes in the Morning by Jorge Cruz. All you do is 2 workout moves every morning with one day off every week. I do it, and I notice a difference. The fiber diet is very true, eat more fiber. Not only will it help you lose weight, but it helps your long-term health far as your colon is concerned too. Check out some books from your library if you are worried about buying a book or try one and then if you love it buy the book so you can always have it on hand. And allow yourself a cheat day or a way to indulge in your cravings. If you don't, you will end up falling back down or giving up and that won't help you. Good luck!

You might buy a couple of exercise videos. I have picked up a few at places like TJ Maxx and Ross for $4-6. You can pop them in when you have a few minutes. Saves the time and energy of getting in the car to go to the fitness center. Also our cable has an On Demand section with a large selection of exercise videos -they change all the time and most are 10-20 minutes- yoga, pilates, kick boxing, etc.

I agree it takes a change of habits over a lifetime.

try thinking positively about all of the foods that you can eat - why not find a bunch of healthy recipes and make yourself something new?

Most of all, try not to worry about losing weight, since it will just make you stressed and stress leads to comfort eating (and it makes your fat deposits shift to around your waist which is not so good for you).

As long as you like your body, you can think of your diet in terms of only eating good foods and being kind to yourself... but don't worry if you eat a chocolate bar or something, as long as it's only occasionally.

Good luck!

Have you ever tried Nutritional Cleansing? This is what I did and it totally changed my life!! Not only did I lose 60 pounds quickly and safely, but I also went from a size 24 to a size 12. I have more energy now than I did in my 20s. I am no longer falling asleep on the couch early in the evening; as a matter of fact I sleep less now but feel more rested and relaxed during the day. People are also telling me how I look 10 years younger than I actually am. (I really like that) I have to admit that I was very skeptical about this alternative health method because I have been a nurse for over 18 years, but like you I felt desperate and had tried every diet under the moon only to gain it all back plus some. So I did it and lo and behold it works! I have kept it off for over 3 years now! If you want more info about it feel free to click on my username and send me a message.
To your Health and wellness goals,

There is a new weight loss capsule being launched and it is the first one like this. It is FDA approved and all natural and has the same effect as a gastric bypass without surgery or side effects. You simply take it 30 minutes before you eat with water and it expands to fill your stomach 20-35% so you eat less and still feel full. People like Heather Hansen from the biggest loser have had amazing results formyourdiet.com/heather_hansen.html
