Salt Blocks for Birds

Many birds love salt blocks. Just make sure it's off the ground and something is under it so you don't kill plants underneath.

Hello Darlene! You should never give salt or salted food to birds not even put salt in the water you provide them so that water will not freeze in the winter.

Read what the RSPB says about it here:

The RSPB is the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, it is a member of BirdLife International and you can really trust the English people when birds protection is concerned.

Copied off another post....a specialist with the Audubon Society/North Carolina wildlife department told me that finches and other bird species will do this regularly to obtain salt when it is lacking from their diet. They also use the salt to help clean out their gizzards (an organ behind the stomach that helps break down seeds and food so that the bird can digest it more easily).
