Removing Rug Backing Stuck To Linoleum Floor?

Bronze Feedback Medal for All Time! 141 Feedbacks

I used to have a rug on my kitchen floor. When I moved it, it left some of the backing, like glue on the linoleum. Any suggestions on how to get it off?

Try spraying it thoroughly with WD40, let set 10 - 15 minutes, and scrape with a plastic scraper, spatula, or edge of a credit card so you don't scratch the floor. This worked for me on a vinyl tile floor. Maybe it will work for you.

Removing rubber/glue backing from area rug on tile floor. You'll need: steamer, such as the Shark hand steamer, metal paint/putty knife to scrape, wet/dry vac, rubbing alcohol or acetone fingernail polish remover

Step 1
Dry scrape any bulky sections that are stuck and vacuum

Step 2
a small section at a time, use steamer to really wet the area

Step 3
scrape wet area and backing should come up (you have to use elbow grease, depending on how stuck it is!)

Step 4
vacuum each section before you start another

Step 5
when finished, take rubbing alcohol on a cloth and go over each section to remove remaining glue residue

Step 6
wipe clean with a damp cloth

The acetone nail polish remover worked a treat. I soaked the area and covered with foil (following idea for removing shellac nail polish), waited 15 minutes and it came off using a BBQ scraper with little effort. Thanks for the tip!

Acetone covered with tinfoil for a few minutes was the only thing that worked! Most of the rubber dots swiped away easily with a sponge.
