Answer:

Sarah, It sounds like you have found some great resources. The following information does not sound like it applies to your particular situation (although check out the link at the end). Nevertheless, it may be of value to others who are considering selling the trees in their backyards for profit.

Recently, a story appeared in the news in Rochester, MN, about a company going door-to door and offering residents money in exchange for their walnut trees. As many of you probably know, Walnut is a type of wood highly prized for its strength, versatility, and beautiful wood grain, and currently, the price of Walnut has gotten quite high.

The practice of selling off your backyard trees is legal and in most cases, the companies buying them are perfectly legitimate. The problem is that during tough economic times people sometimes become shortsighted and have a difficult time passing up a seemingly great deal.

In most cases, leaving the trees there is of much greater value to homeowners than the money offered by companies to remove them. Not only do the trees provide shade, fresh air, contribute to water quality, and provide shelter and food to neighborhood animals, but mature trees (the ones usually sought after by companies) can add up to 10% to a homeowner's property value. That equates to a dollar amount that is usually a far greater than they receive for selling them.

Make sure if you are thinking about selling one or more of trees on you're property (especially if it's an urban property) that you consider all aspects of the deal before committing to the transaction. Also be aware that legitimate companies do not usually go door-to-door making offers, and all should be happy to provide you with a copy of their license and insurance, as well as several references.

Here are some other ways to make money from the trees (and plants) on your land without necessarily selling them:

Call a few lumber yards in your area, and find out if there is a company who will remove your trees and pay you for the wood.

If they are big old oak trees, I'd suggest calling a local furniture maker, cabinet maker, or lumber mill. Large old oak trees can be quarter-sawn to produce a grain called 'tiger oak', which is extremely rare and quite expensive. There are very few large old oak trees left which are large enough to be cut this way, in order to produce this wood grain. I would not under any circumstances pay someone to cut these trees. I'd sell them.

The furniture that will be made from them will be sold for hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars! Do a Google search for 'Tiger Oak Furniture' and see what the prices are for yourself. I only know this because I own several pieces of this type furniture (I inherited it, I could never afford it). I do know that when the big old oak tree in my front yard goes down, i'm having some furniture made out of it.
I hope that this helps you!

Here in California, a house and lot with an oak tree on it can fetch at least another thousand dollars in value as landscaping. Do you have to get rid of them for some reason?

My parents had to get rid of some trees do to some ice storms. What we did and this was a family affair. First we rented a shredder. Somebody had come in and cut the trees down. We had to shred the branches and a lot of little stuff. We of course did all the shredding one day, to get the shredder back to the place we rented it from.

Then on the following weekend we cut everything into smaller pieces. This was for their fire place and believe me it was a lot of wood. Had they not needed it, we would have put a add in the paper and sold it. That is if you really have the time to do this. You can even put a add in the paper after the trees are cut down, and people will come to your house cut the wood up themselves, and take it home with them. I know we have done that before.people are looking for other way's to cut fuel bills and believe it or not there are still places where people live who still do not get gas and use wood burning stoves and alternate ways to heat. It is really how much time and work you want to put into it. Hope I was some help. Good Luck.Have fun, whatever you do!

I think you will have to pay someone to remove them.
But try calling your city hall ask if they dig and haul away trees, plants & bushes to be replanted in city parks. Think GREEN. Maybe the city/county will have another idea for you. Worked for us. Good Luck, GG Vi

I had several trees removed from my front yard by the company who does work for the state of PA, Asplundh. (sp) They did the work for free because they were near utility lines.

Because your trees are oak trees, i believe they are worth money. Check with a logging company or better yet a forester. See if the State Grange of New Jersey has a state foresterr they recommend. He will recommend reputable companies to take down and pay you for your trees. He may even do it himself. (BTW, the Grange might be listed under Patrons of Husbandry in the phone listings)

Good luck

If you find someone let me know We had two trees removed recently and IT COST A FORTUNE. I feel this is absolutely terrible, I simply can not see why you can not have this done by someone or something that could do it for the use of the wood, one use or the other. I have at least 15 trees on my property that NEED to go. One of the posters ask why...as you get older you simply can not clean up after the total mess that trees make. I have oaks, and cherries and maples and pines!
I would move, but this is my home for over 30 years. I just need the trees gone.

Hi everyone,
Thank you very much for your great suggestions!
I have found some foresters in NJ. Yes, I can sell them. I will choose one of them to value and sell those trees. Pay 10-15% commission.
We have about 50 trees in our backyard. They are tall and straight. Just want to remove 8 of them to make a better backyard for our kids to play and maybe I can grow some vegetables and fruits too.
Sound nice? :)
If you have similar questions about your trees and forest Here is a website you can get a lot of help from.

Hi Sarah,
I live in NJ also. We had three 50 year old oak trees in our yard. They were doing alot of damage to our foundation. We had to hire somone to take them down. My husband couldn't find any lumber company to come and take them down. If you do hire someone to take them down, get plenty of estimates. It cost us $5500 to take ours down and the stumps ground but it was no easy task. The first company ran away with $2000 of our money after the guy fell out of our tree. We are still having problems with it. They said they had insurance and we got the copy of the form but there was fraud there. We finally got the trees taken down but it took 3 other companys to do it. Plus none of them hauled the wood away so we had to cut and split ALL of it. Yes we sold it all very cheap (just to get rid of it) $100 a cord. I wish you alot of luck and I hope your experience is alot better than mine was. P. S. get experienced people too and mke sure they have insurance and down give a down payment. They don't need one.(thats where we got stung)

Can I mention TO BE AWARE of scams from individuals stopping by to offer money to cut trees, do yard work, pave driveways, etc. My parents were lured into a conversation about cutting down their trees while someone snuck into their home and robbed them. This happened in NJ and another team tried it in Pa. It was all over the newspapers since it happened to quite a few others. Sometimes they even actually do some small yard project, watch where you get the money/checkbook to pay them and later sneak in and steal it! They especially like older people.
