Hulling a Strawberry

Now that strawberry season is here in Florida, I want to share a tip to hull them quickly and with nearly no waste. Use the small end of a melon baller. This technique works so slick!

I always use a metal baby feeding spoon. They have a small pointed tip and narrow spoon "bowl" that digs out the stem very easily.

To hull a strawberry, push a large drinking straw up through from the pointed end of the fruit. Kids can do this as well.

Here's an easy way to remove the strawberry twig/stem. Insert a plastic drinking straw through the bottom of berry in upward position, stem comes right off.

When hulling strawberries, use a sturdy plastic straw. Push the straw up from the bottom of the strawberry through the top. It takes out the hull and the leaves fall off also. A paper straw will not do the job. You will need to use a plastic one but it is a real time saver, especially if you do a lot of berries for jams, jellies or company shortcake.
