When my daughter turned five, I did a princess tea party. I went to Dollar store and got each girl a tea cup w/saucer. (use punch) I also purchased a plastic crown for each girl. I don't like spending money on things I know they will break or lose, so I purchased a small inexpensive flowering plant as a take home goody. I was shocked to see how excited the girls were when I told them to pick out the one they wanted. I should say, they make great center piece for party! We did homemade games like place the jewel on the crown,( just like pin the tail on donkey) simple sandwhiches and veggie sticks for lunch. Just keep it short and sweet!

I did one of these with my daughter a few years ago I purchased poster board and made each girl a cone shaped hat. then they got to decorate it with tuile, (to make that flowing tassel thing fromthe top) and dollar store gems, glitter etc. You could cut out paper crowns and do the same thing. Craft foam works well for the crowns. this was the "craft" component of the party.
I also got a plain white paper table cloth and traced all the Disney Princesses from a colouring book -- one at each person's place at the table. They could colour this while they were sitting there (ie waiting for luncheon).
I made a Snow White cake (using a bowl and half a Barbie doll). Party favours are fun and sometimes to can get tiarras for each girl as well. But not necessary if you make the hats.
I think we had fancy sandwiches (just cut the crusts off your favourite ones) and we had pretty punch in tea cups. I think I got nice cups from my local thrift store, washed them and then let each girl take their cup home after I filled them with candy. have fun!

I am starting to plan my daughter's 4th Birthday. She wants to invite a few friends from school and she wants to have a princess theme. Does anyone have any cute, cheap ideas for her party? I was hoping to only spend about $30 and I was planning on inviting about 7 girls (I know that seems a lot but we will be having her party in the summer and figured only about half will show up!). Thank you!

I had a princess party for my oldest when she was five. It was a lot of fun. (My son dressed up as prince charming!) All of the little girls came in their prettiest princess dresses.
I bought princess tiaras and cheap plastic play jewelry for all the girls. I gave each girl a tiara, but for the other jewelry I incorporated it into a game of musical chairs. I put a necklace or bracelet on each chair, and whichever chair the girls sat on, they got to put on the jewelry.
I also made a "pin the kiss on the frog" game. I made a large frog out of green paper, and made little lips out of red paper. The girls stuck the lips on the frog just like you would in pin the tail on the donkey. We also played whisper down the alley and I had a pinata shaped like a crown.
I made a birthday cake shaped like a castle that was a big hit. I made one large square cake, and one smaller square cake. I put the small one in the center of the large one and iced them. Then I took 5 sugar-cones and iced the outside of the cone and covered them in sparkly sprinkles. I turned the cones upside down and put one on each corner of the large cake, and one in the center of the small cake. I then took toothpicks and some paper and made tiny flags, and stuck them into the tips of the ice-cream cones. Then I just sprinkled pink sparkly sugar all over the cake and added a few windows and doors with brown icing, and it looked great! All the moms were amazed, but it was actually really easy.
A few extra things I did (but were rather pricey) were, I hired a woman who came to the party dressed as Cinderella and did magic tricks ($150.00), and I purchased a big blow-up castle that had tunnels and rooms for the kids to crawl through ($80.00). (07/18/2007)

Thanks to all. The ideas are helpful. I, too, thought about doing the dress-up, along with face painting, make-up center and art, with princess and prince for the boys coloring sheets. I am a teacher, so I know centers work well. I am having pink cupcakes shaped like a crown with Princess Payton on top. It is her first birthday, so less mess maybe. (06/24/2008)

A few well chosen songs or a soundtrack to Cinderella can provide a "ballroom" feel and make a fun video as the princesses dance. Also, have a few Princess themed books to have a mom read to the kids during a lull. Nail painting and a photo session are also fun and cheap. Just make sure you have helping hands. Consider letting the kids decorate a homemade, pink frosted cake. (01/16/2010)

My little princess is turning 4, and she wants a princess party. Anyone have any suggestions? As I am not that great of a party planner I can use all the help I can get. I have looked every where for boas and they are expensive, anyone know of whenre to get them any cheaper?

Hello, Do you have a dollar store near where you live? The Dollar Tree here has little girl's feather boas for $1.00 each. They also have all types of princess items. Try that avenue. Also do a search of the internet for princess party ideas. You'll be amazed the information you'll find! Good luck and enjoy the party.

As far as boas and other party favors, the dollar stores are a good idea, as well as the Oriental Trading Company - orientaltrading.com. You can order by catalog or website. Another really neat site I just discovered the other day is the American Science and Surplus Company - sciplus.com I was thinking that would be a good place to get party favors, crafting things, etc.
As an aside, I would also recommend that you keep guest size small, a 5 yo party's would have 5 guests. If this is a children only party. Makes it a lot more manageable. HTH and have fun!

I did a Princess Party for my 4 year old in May. Our invites were just done on the computer and said... "Princess Emma is having a Princess Party! Please Join us for some Princess fun! (inside) Princess Emma would like her princess friends to join her in celebrating her 4th birthday. Please wear your princess dress and come and play princess games, hear a princess story and eat princess cake. When... Where... Mommies can wear their princess dresses too. No presents please, just princess friends." We only invited 6 girls which was perfect. All of the mom's thought it was great and the girls had soooo much fun. We did it from 10-11:30 in the morning so that we didn't need to serve a full meal. Did fruit salad, cheese tray, heart shaped rice crispy bars and a princess cake (wal-mart sells a kit). When the girls first arrived we had make a crown kits on the table that they could work on until everyone else got there (i bought these through Oriental trading). They took their crowns home with them. When they were finished with their crowns and waiting for others, I had decorated the living room as a "ball room" with tulling and white lights (leftovers from my wedding).

The Dollar Tree does have boas but usually there not nearly as fluffy as I would prefer. As for general ideas for a princess party the a supply that you should get a lot of is craft jewels. You can use them to cover almost anything. For each girl you can spray paint a box gold or silver and let them glue on jewels like a treasure box. They have wooden boxes for a dollar at Michael's or you could some kind of card board box. For each kid, you can make a head wreath with ribbon, star garland and fake flowers. You can play kiss the frog on his lips, like pin the tale on the donkey but each girl puts on lipstick and is blind folded then tries to kiss the frog on his lips. After each person does, write there initials by each kiss so you know who's is who's. If you don't want to use the make up, you can just use paper kisses to pin on the frog. You can have a treasure hunt for favors. Party favors can be bubbles, lolly pop rings, rock candy, candy necklaces and scepters made out of dowels (found at Michael's for 50 cents each) and styrofoam all painted silver or gold with jewels glued to the styrofoam orbs at the top.

You can make enough boas for a whole party with one skein of yarn - just check your local craft store to see what's available. For a party craft, use what we used to call pipe cleaners and sparkly beads to make tiaras, magic wands, etc. I did this for my 4 year old and she still remembers it 20 years later!
