(This recipe has been handed down, but never written with exact measurements). Dump sugar (I used 1 cup) into large heavy saucepan (4 qt.). Add enough cocoa to make the sugar dirty. Add enough light Karo syrup to make the mixture sticky gooey. Add enough milk to make mixture sloppy. Cook, stirring until mixture boils. Boil without stirring until soft ball stage. Remove from heat, add a couple of tablespoons of butter and cool. Add vanilla. Beat until candy loses the gloss. Pour into buttered pan.
