Wiring a Two Pole Breaker For a Generator?

I would like to run a 2pole 20amp breaker separate from the other breakers to a portable generator. It would be in the off position unless there was an emergency to start the generator. Can this be done?

Yes, but I would hire an electrical to do the job. I have a generator hardwired to my electric service but it is done in such a way that when I run the generator the electricity does not travel out to the power grid. Any power company worker working on the line to restore power could get a electric shock the way you want to hook up your generator.

I totally agree with 'foxrun41'! Do not wire your generator that way. Besides somebody possible getting electrocuted you'd most likely be sued for everything you have.

I agree with everyone else! A transfer switch is easy to install! Do It right!
