I need ideas for an affordable reception area and caterer to suit 250 guests? Somewhere that does their own decorating and has their own linens.

Try your local college as they usually have large rooms for affairs at the schools as well as they usually have some type of cooking / catering classes as well. Another option is do you or your groom have any friends or family that are members of a fraternal club or organization as you are able to get all you are looking for at one of the locations of an Elk's, Moose, Eagle's etc to get the members price but it is usually tax deductible for your dues and initiation cost. You may have to join if you don't have a friend or family member that is a member of such but the prices are exceptionally good and they usually have all of the supplies you will need as well as servers and a full service bar to boot! If they do not have catering look up cooking schools, the price is much lower as students are doing the preparation and cooking as well as the presentation so you are usually able to get gourmet foods at burger joint prices, after all Wolfgang Puck, Emeril etc were all students at one time or another so the food can be exceptional.
Try the music department as well for musicians for your music needs at the ceremony or the reception! Linens, try having someone make them and then to recoup the cost by putting them on e-bay / craigs list and sell them for your cost of making them or donate them to a non-profit organization and take the tax write off! Remember to get ALL details in writing to protect your self and the vendors you are using even if they are students. It is just a safe and good practice to protect your self as well as the vendor as then everything is in writing and no miscommunications are made as it is all in black and white, a copy for you and one for them.
Good luck !
Olympia Hall in East Pittsburgh, PA. My daughter's wedding was there 3 years ago. They have the most gorgeous painted restroom, too!
