Organizing Shoes?

I am looking for a way to organize my shoes. I only own enough pairs to fit in a large plastic tote box, but I am finding out this is not a good way to keep your shoes. Not only can't you find pairs, but keeping them in a plastic box isn't a good idea.

I don't have much space to work with. Do any of you creative, thrifty readers have any ideas on how I might organize them? Thanks for your thoughts.

I have an addiction to shoes and have a bunch in my closet. I hung one of these "over the door" shoe organizers on the back of my closet door and that helped, but I still needed more storage! So I bought another plastic organizer and nailed it up on the closet wall. If you don't have a clear wall in your closet you might try hanging one behind your clothes. I hope this helps, it has helped me!

If you can get hold of the cardboard boxes shoes are sold in (or you may have kept them anyway), I have heard a tip for taking a photo of each pair and sticking it to the front of the box, then stack the boxes up in an unobtrusive corner. You can see at a glance which pair is in which box. I have also heard the idea of decorating the boxes with self-adhesive plastic, to make more of a feature of your collection.

I keep mine in the plastic "shoebox size" rubbermaid totes. That way I can stack them and easily grab the ones I want. For shoes I don't wear alot, I keep them stuffed with tissue paper. You can also put sachet in there to help them smelling fresh.

I like this because I can swap them out seasonally and keep the seasonal ones in the front, and the ones I am not wearing in the back. It also keeps the dust bunnies away and the cat hair off my shoes.

My sister-in-law has these as well, and slides them along the perimeter of her bed. Another friend stacked them underneath a nightstand and covered it with a tablecloth to hide them.

I use one of those wood cubes with dividers. They hold up to nine pairs of shoes, but I have found that you can store umbrellas and other things in any sections you don't fill with shoes. The best thing is that the cube doesn't take up much closet space, and you have a sturdy flat surface to store something on top of the cube. I think I bought mine on sale at KMart or Target.

The shoe storage I use is wine bottle boxes. They usually have 6 to 8 slots for 6 to 8 pairs of shoes, unless you have exceptionally large shoes.

If you still have the boxes use them but most of us throw the boxes out. You can buy rubber maid type boxes at the dollar store or variety store. Clean shoes and place in box. Take a picture of each pair and attach on outer side of box. Stack on shelf or in bottom of closet and then when you need them just glance at the pictures to choose the pair you need. Take a small cloth bag or make your own. Fill with your favorite talc powder and place in box with shoes. No foot smell and your closet smells good too.

I bought one of those portable clothing rack ($15)and hung two $10 vertical clothing hangers (each have seven "shelves.") Thus 14 pairs of shoes hang vertically. It's nice because my shoes (men size 12) all fit without being cramping.

Plus all of the shoes are off the floor and I can get a clear view of all the shoes at once glance.

I have my shoes in plastic rubbermaid shoeboxes. I just used an instant camera to put pictures outside the boxes.

I love to be organized and one things I do in my closet is keep my shoes in the clear plastic shoe boxes and I label the end with the color and style of shoe. It is very easy to find what you need in a hurry and very easy to put away. Happy walking.

We built simple shelves on the back of our closet from the floor up. I can see the shoes, so I don't need lables and they are easy to just set on the shelf.

I noticed some posters said to BUY the rubbermaid style shoeboxes. If money is also a concern, you can sometimes find leftover shoe boxes at shoe stores.

Organizing shoes in a limited time; If you have any wall space inside or outside the closet, get wood (1"X2") and make a frame in the allowed space. Then, get thin pegboard and cut to size of that frame you made and nail it or screw it on. Then, chose from the various elongated hooks that fit that pegboard for as many pairs of shoes you can hang.

Here's an idea to make it easier to find your shoes - label the end of the boxes or clear plastic boxes with kind and color of shoe. Then stack neatly in your closet, (above or below the racks). It saves valuable time searching.

In order for my shoes not to become separated I use the large elastic bands that are wrapped around my newspapers and I wrap them around my shoes. So far, so good!

To better organize my shoes, I keep them in the boxes they came in and attach a picture of them to the end panel, so I'll know in a glance which pair is in which box.

I've got a lot of extra hanging space in my closet but not a lot of floor space so I just hung all my heels on the hanging rack

My sister-in-law taught me this one - she reuses the Swifter sweeper mopping cloth refill containers (24ct size) to store her shoes in. The top is clear so it is easy to see the shoes in there! Silly me was throwing them out. I'm already thinking about what else I can do with these containers.
