How does one go about getting a copyright on a t-shirt design? Is it necessary?

It is if you want to save it as your own.

Some have used the "Poor Mans Copyright" which means you put all the original information in an envelope and mail it to yourself. Then, simply do not open it...ever. But for some more expensive but safer ways, you can find good patents and copyright information on www.legalzoom.com where you can click on copyright and get this link:
