Reuse Healthy Choice Steamer Baskets

If you are trying to eat healthier and steam vegetables in your microwave, a bowl from Healthy Choice steamers works well time after time. You will also be recycling at the same time. I love not having to drag out my strainer all the time.

I absolutely love your idea but if the basket has a recycle number stamped on the bottom that is anything other than #2, #4 or #5 it is not safe to reuse for food or beverages (especially in a microwave) because of chemicals that leach from the plastic. :-( If there is no number stamp I would call the 800 number for Healthy Choice and ask them what the recycle number is for the basket.

It has a number 5 on the bottom

This also makes a great single size pasta serving too!

I posed the question to ConAgra about reusing the bowls and the following
is taken from an e-mail from ConAgra's Consumer Relations Dept:

"Thank you for your email concerning our Healthy Choice® Cafe Steamers, a product of ConAgra Foods.

We do not recommend re-using the Cafe Steamers bowls. Our Healthy Choice Café Steamers packaging was designed to maximize quality and performance of our packaging, while providing the best possible value to our consumers. We do not recommend or warrantee the bowl and basket for multiple or alternate uses. "

Loved the product but this is a deal breaker. Looks like the bowl will be a painting palette sometime soon

Why would they take on any additional risk by recommending that consumers reuse their steamer basket. ConAgra already made their money selling you the frozen meal.

Now you want them to take on being sued because they recommend people reuse the steamer basket?

Of course they would say that. Eliminates liability but also translates to more sales of their products. Dun!!!

I do to. Could use as a plant holder, sifter for sand/rocks/beads, stencil, powder sugar for cupcakes sifter or design.

To reuse as a steamer: how much water would you use? Cover with Saran? For how long? Thanks for the information.

Just cover with another bowl (not the steamer basket but the bowl). So it'll be a flipped bowl, and right side up basket, right side up bowl.

I'd really like to be confident about reusing my small Healthy Choice steamer bowl because it's the perfect size to steam a single salmon filet or a serving of veg. I have reused it several times now, but I worry that repeated use might degrade the plastic somehow, making it less safe.

It sounds like all other respondents (except HC) don't seem concerned...???

Stop buying steamer basket meals if you don't reuse the baskets and the bowls afterwards. Common sense. Remember that the poison is in the dose, and there is no dose in what you are worrying about. What the dose is, is to the planet. It's the numbers that go to the landfills and the burners. You should be saving those baskets and bowls and using them. What you do otherwise with them is much worse for you. a word from the wiswe

Just thought it was kind of funny, you responded with "a word from the wiswe" but didn't spell wise correctly, unless there is some meaning I am not aware of for the extra w..

I enjoyed a few healthy choice selections and recently purchased more than normal I am now eating these more than in the past and have tasted or smelled plastics I can't continue to use them I guess I've developed a sensitivity Also could not find if these containers have BPA which is something I would not want to touch. Going back to normal cooking Sorry but no thanks

The baskets can be used for sifting sand for kids on the beach, sifting seeds, rocks, etc. Powder Sugar stencil for cupcakes, stencil for painting, plant bowl (strainer keeps plant above water).

Craft bowls for separation, cereal bowls for camping, cooling off in a stream. :) Just a few :)

Could you use them in an air fryer to keep the air fryer clean?

I think the air fryer gets too hot and the plastic bowl would melt.

I really hope you are not being serious, that could be very dangerous please do not put that in an air fryer

I thought of a use for the steamer bowls! Sprouts! Put water in the bottom, seeds in top bowl, cover with parchment, cheese cloth or loose plastic wrap. Water sprouts daily with a spray bottle. Change water bowl, probably daily. And I just thought of another use!

Planter for succulent plants. Fill slotted bowl with succulent potting soil. Put little plants in the dirt. Water. Excess water can drain, which is necessary for succulents. Let it dry out completely before watering again.

I was thinking of using these for my succulents as well a coffee filter for regular coffee pot fits perfectly in there then you can add your soil for the succulents add your succulents water it will drain through slowly to get them nice and watered and then wait until they're completely dry again repeat!
