Wildlife: Backyard Birds (Cardinal and Woodpecker)

I was already taking pictures of this lovely female cardinal when the downy woodpecker came in. He nipped her tail a little, hence the indignant attitude!

Isn't it wonderful how the birds know their 'pecking' order? Do your male cardinals allow the females to eat seeds beside them at a feeder? Mine never do.

I assume the males are not worried much about the girls holding out on them.

Thank You everyone! The male and female cardinals will feed together on the ground sometimes, but usually the male is watching as the female eats. Perhaps he is protecting her, I don't know for sure. All I know is, I love watching birds and taking photos of them. My husband re-worked the bottom of our screen door so I could take pictures from inside the house without having to disturb them by opening the door.

I just have to pull on a little square of screen. Plus I don't have to step outside if it's cold or raining. I've gotten a lot of good pictures because of that.
