There is a product called Dirtex which I love. It's a small box of power/crystals you mix with water and wipe your walls with. You can buy it at hardware stores or larger home improvement stores. It's wonderful stuff, and no smell or harsh chemicals.

If you are talking about regular plasterboard walls painted with an oil base paint, just about any household cleaner will do. You can use Mr. Clean, Dawn, Pinesol, ammonia (which I find too stinky!) in water these are just products that I can think of, a couple of cap fulls in about a 1/2 -3/4 gal of water is good. Many people swear by vinegar and water, but I think actual soap/detergent based products are better for walls, especially if they have smoke or accumulated dirt or cooking grease on them. You can also use bleach in water, but I would only do that if there is mildew. For washing walls, you don't need anything special.

Will diluted Clorox damage colored, painted walls? They are stained with mold.

Even it it did lighten the paint, you need to get rid of the mold. And diluted bleach is actually more effective than full strength for killing mold and mildew, too! (01/28/2010)

Use 1/2 teaspoon of oil of cloves (you can get it in your drug store) diluted in 1 litre of water in a cheap spray bottle. Shake it up. Spray on lightly, wipe it over. Will kill the mold in a few days. You may need to dust off the dead mold in a few days.

This will actually kill the mould naturally.

Cleaning mold with bleach is pretty much a myth; check out this page from the EPA: epa.gov

Basically, they suggest cleaning with detergent and water, thoroughly drying and then making sure that whatever the cause of the mold buildup is, is addressed. This would mean checking and repairing any plumbing problems, leaks, windows or doors that need weatherstripping or replacement.

It also says that if you're talking about a 10 ft. square area or bigger it might be in the long-range best interests of your health and the construction of the wall to get the professionals in. If it's a large area and you don't get it all, it will continue to grow and consume more wall area (as well as likely make you sick). (01/28/2010)

My walls are staining, as the windows are not always kept open in the apartment. How do I clean up the walls which are painted with a water based paint and get rid of all the black marks on it?

Use a product called "TSP." It can be found in most hardware stores. Great for dirt and grease. It is a granule that you mix with water. (07/27/2006)

If you can get it, use Mr. Clean's Magic eraser cleaning pad. They are great for walls. (07/27/2006)

The black marks on your wall could be mold. Try using some bleach mixed with water in a spray bottle to kill the mold first and then repaint with paint used to kill mold. (07/30/2006)
