Make homemade candles with baby food jars. Melt down old candles. Use metal washers for weights tied to toothpicks.

I've gotten these for both wedding (the jars were decorated with some ribbon and lace, and had a tiny spray of flowers tied to them) and baby shower (candles were made from pink or blue wax and had a ribbon tied around them) favors. The lids had been spray painted or left off. Some jars had tags with cute sayings attached. They make really nice favors and are reasonable to make, especially if you get old candles at yard sales to melt down. They can be made at your convenience over time and can be scented if you wish. Finally, they are something the receiver can use (or give to someone who will use) rather than set around to collect dust or get thrown away.

And I really love the idea of recycling.

I've seen some with really neat labels printed on a computer and attached. One baby shower for example, had a jar with green wax bearing a home-made label for strained peas, orange wax bore a label for pureed pumpkin, brown wax (mixed left-over candles) had a label for meat, etc. Each label looked authentic, but had information regarding the baby on it. The jars were stacked on the reception table like a centerpiece. It was a surprise when the mother gave each guest a jar as a favor to take home.
