Starlight - Star (Miniature Cocker Spaniel)

This is a picture of the newest member of our family. Her name is Star and she is a miniature Cocker Spaniel that we got from the pound last October. They said she is about 7 years old. She is the most loving dog you have ever seen. Her favorite thing to do this hot summer is lick ice cubes until they are gone! This picture of her has been nicknamed Willy (for Willie Nelson) by my sister.

How big is she? I did not know that there was a Miniature Cocker Spaniel. How many pounds is she? Is she a cocker spaniel or a King Charles Spaniel or ...?

We have a black American Cocker Spaniel and she is wonderful with kids and so well behaved. Sounds like the same temperment as yours.

Star is about 8 years old - she is as big as she will get - she weighs a little over 16 pounds and is just so much fun to have around. You may have seen my other post with the other Cocker Spaniel we adopted named Sammy - he is full grown as well but weighs over 30 pounds!

i just purchased a miniature cocker spaniel. i bought them from a lady in arkansas. if anyone is interested in one, she sells them often. she's been breeding since the 70's. the dog that i have is 3 months old and weighs 3 pounds. its parents weighed 10 pounds each and she said the most he'll weigh will be 10 pounds.

I too am looking to purchase a miniature cocker spaniel. I have a standard sized blonde male and I just love him. One morning I woke up and thought.. "I wonder if there are miniature cockers out there".. I did a search and here I am. I would appreciate any information on breeders.
Thanks.

There is no such thing as a miniature Cocker Spaniel. People are breeding for size and NOT conformation and temperment which AKC is famous for. AKC does not recognize a "miniature" because they are not bred properly. So when you buy these designer dogs you are opening up a whole new can of worms in terms of genetic defects and horrible behavioral problems.

I hope the best for all of you and your new babies. Hopefully none of your new family members will fall into this catagory.

I am a Cocker Spaniel breeder. I have both standard and small Cocker Spaniels. They are registered as Cocker Spaniels. There is not a reconized toy or mini Cocker. There are several catagories of Spaniels: Britney--Springer--Cavilier--Susex--English--American.
All of these come out of one breed yearrrrs ago. They were divided by charactics and an there uses. There are alot of breeders that will say that it is wrong to breed if the dogs doesn't fall in the right size and perfect charactics.......If this was true of humans, I would be too small and thus a reject.... I believe, to miss out on the Cocker Spaniel's great personality, is the crime. Measures should be taken with any breeder to be sure the dog is healthy before breeding... I am breeding smaller size Cockers, because, I love Cockers and have back problems. There may be a time that the smaller Cocker Spaniel is excepted and can be shown. But until then they still can be registered as Cocker Spaniel. tlbradenatearth-commdotcom

Hi,

I inherited my fathers minature cocker, when he passed. He is such a strong breed. Never any stomach problems and he can eat more then my other two larger dogs and never throws up. He is tough guy who unfortunately is about 16. Never been neutered. My father had wanted to breed him. He has no papers.. and I wanted to know, if age matters if there was a willing party? I want a little him.

I have an male black English cocker who is 20.9 lbs, he was not advertised as a miniature cocker. His mother and father definitely aren't miniature but he seems to have stopped growing! He is now 2.5 years old and I is the most perfect beautiful example of a cocker, enough so that people stop me in the street and ask me if I show him. I don't for a couple of reasons, one, that that isn't why I bought him, he was the last one at 15 weeks old and no-one wanted him, two, he was hand reared and called "Stuart", now renamed billy or "little man" to anyone who knows him and three, he only had one testicle descended and therefore had to have both removed. He is the most loving and loyal little boy anyone could wish for.

There is no such thing as a miniature cocker spaniel. That is why there are no books on them. Some breeders advertise miniature cockers in order to sell the for higher prices. If you look on the papers it does not say miniature. Some cockers grow up smaller than others. That's it. I have seen 14 pound, and 30 pound cockers. They are all cockers.

As a rescuer of Cockers either puppymill dogs or left over Christmas presents. I find it appalling anyone would want to stunt a breed. Cockers either English or American should stay as they are. It has taken many, many generations of dogs bred by experienced well qualified experts to keep the breed true as we all know and love them.

This is why I believe a litter bred for design only, will always have 3 out of 4 undesirable pups to be either PTS or sent to rescues if they are lucky! And Mom will be bred within the same year, before her last litter is even walking. Just to make it up to you. Keep who you have and work with them. They are not returnable!

Cockers are a very smart, a willing to please breed. It might take patience, and a loving touch. And they are best friends for life!

I got a little cocker girl from a breeder and there were no claims about size. She grew to all of 19 pounds, 10 pounds less than my other one. But she is an athlete and wonderful girl. Here she comes out of the agility tunnel! Nothing mini in this girl's attitude!

I am a breeder of Cocker Spaniels. There is NO such thing as a Miniature Cocker Spaniel. You just happened to get the runt of the litter or someone is breeding two runts together and they are just producing small. The average size of a Cocker is 16-20 lbs. for a female to 20-30 lbs. for a male. A lot of times a small Cocker is a sign of an under lying condition. Hope you don't get burnt with your 'designer dogs'. You should always make sure that the parents of your puppy are health tested. We test for thyroid, eyes are CERF'd (examined by an opthymologist) and hips, patellas, and elbows are certified as well. This still doesn't guarantee no problems ever but the odds are better that you won't.

I got a Cocker from a pet store when we first got one, strictly as a pet, and he died at 6 years of brain cancer. You also have to be very aware of the temperament. I know most think that show breeders are snobs and who cares if they are out of CH. But those titles to the pet people mean that the sire and dam are of good temperament. Think about it. That dog has to get along with several hundreds to thousands of dogs at a time and at least that many people. They are touched, mouths looked in, and handled by several people in a day. Wow that would constitute a good temperament to me wouldn't you agree? I know were my dogs came from for several generations and know what there temperaments were or know of someone who does. That says more to me than being cute. Every puppy is cute. What will yours look like? I know what my puppies will turn out to be... do you?

There are a lot of people on here stating that there is no such thing as a Miniature Cocker Spaniel. While they may not be recognized yet as being different from the 25-30 pound Cocker Spaniels they are different. How do you think the "Toy" and "Miniature" breeds came about.

There was a time when there was no difference between a 'toy" poodle and a "miniature" poodle. With time and hard work of breeders is was acknowledged that there is a difference. I believe that one day there will be a standard American cocker spaniel and a miniature American cocker spaniel. I have a 10 pound girl and a 12 pound boy. Both are adults and 3-4 yrs old. They are smaller versions of a "standard" Cocker Spaniel, but there is a clear difference between them and other Cocker Spaniels we see.
