Organizing Craft Patterns

I love to sew, but one thing I don't like is trying to get the pattern pieces back into those little envelopes that have the pattern in it originally. I knew I had to do something. I went to an office supply store and bought some cheap file folders. I sew them along the sides then cut the pattern envelope to the size of the file folder and tape or glue it on the outside. It is so much easier to fold the pattern pieces to fit the file folder. I bought a file cabinet at an auction for $1.00 and I was set. No more frustration.

I have the same problem and I solved it by cutting down one side and across the bottom of the pattern envelope. It makes a folder for the pattern pieces. I store these in plastic zip freezer bags. I can see the back of the envelope for yardage and notions.

I use a combination of several of these ideas. I do use the Ziplock bags for the pattern pieces. Then I use manilla file folders stapled on the sides to slip the patterns(inside ziplocs) in. I use the tabs on the folders to identify the pattern by number and type. I have some old TIDE boxes with handles that i covered with contact paper years ago. I use these like a file. On the side of the "file" (tide box) I label the box on which patterns are in that box.

Example: Apparel Patterns #2260-#5741, "handbag, wallet, & tote patterns", Household crafts, Pet patterns (crafts, beds, etc). In each box, I usually have a file folder from patterns I may have printed off the internet. I keep these 'boxes' on a shelf in my closet with labels out. When I am looking for a pattern, I pull down the box with the type of pattern in it. I also have some copies of the pattern face in a 3 ring binder that is more accessible.
