Cleaning Wood Floors With Dog Prints?

I clean for a couple that has wooden floors and 2 very large dogs that track in and out all day long. I only clean there once a week and the dirt from the dogs' paws is bad. Everything I have tried makes the floor look as if I just smeared the dirt around. I do vacuum before mopping. What can I use to make this floor shine and make this couple happy?

I'd start with the simple things like check the mop - maybe request a new one if the old one is worn or very soiled. Change the mop water very frequently. Use something like ammonia or vinegar to cut through the dirt without leaving a residue. When I want to give my floors a really good clean I go over them with the large traditional cotton mop and wringer bucket with very hot water and cloudy ammonia or bleach, (not sure how the bleach would go on wood floors though?!), then, as I finish each section of about 6 square feet I finish off with a Sabco mop with the toweling pad.

This gets the floors spotless and they dry in a few minutes.

I would use a mix of 1 part vinegar to two parts water for the floor after you vaccuum/sweep. I know it isn't the most pleasant thing, but to really get my floors clean I use a rag and hand mop them on my knees. I think it cleans much better than a mop. I also like Murphy's oil for my hard wood floor.

From a professional cleaner Murphys Oil Soap will build up black soot over a period time because it is oil based.

I would not use vinegar on a wood floor. Try hot water and just a little dawn dish soap. Too much will leave a residue.

Hi,

We live in a very dusty/muddy place and use wood floor cleaner from Bellawood. You can purchase a cleaning kit online from Bellawood for $25. The cleaner is soy based and works.

Good luck

We've tried most of the other products listed and also a Swiffer. The only product we found to work is made by Zep Commercial, it's called Hardwood & Laminate cleaner. Spray it on and wipe with a cloth or paper towel and what's left dries quickly. The only ingredient mentioned was glycol ethers. I got it at Home Depot and their site, www.zepcommercial.com, lists other stores.
Good Luck.

I use a wood floor cleaner that you spray on and wipe off (with a wood floor mop). My solid bamboo floors not only are clean but also have little shine. Sandy

You really need to try Earth Friendly Product Floor Kleener for hardwood floors. If you're cleaning for a family with pets you run the risk of putting toxins on the floors which the dogs will absorbe into their pads.

This is a completely eco-friendly product that has a citrus smell and really works

hi! i have this problem at my house also. i have 4 big doggies that go in and out all the time to. I went and bought one of those wet clorox mopping brooms and use it daily. it does a pretty nice job keeping the floors clean until i get a chance to give them a"proper" cleaning on the weekends.

I clean for people too and i know that most people dont want to mess with a lot of cleaning during the week so maybe this will help keep the floors a little cleaner until you get there. I also use orange glow cleaner for wood floors on mine on the weekends to help them shine ""

The Bellawood floor cleaner is definately the best product I have used. I almost had to report Lumber Liquidators to the BBB because they charged my credit card for the Bellawood Floor Cleaning kit in February, and did not deliver it until May!!
Suggestion: Order the cleaning kit through FloorCleaners.net - save yourself some hassle.

I clean my cherry floors with Quick Shine floor Cleaner (holloway House...you can get it at Walmart) and then if the marks don't come off I use Quick Shine Floor Finisher. It puts a really nice shine on the floor and protects it.

The only down side to the floor finisher is you have to do the entire room otherwise you will see the area you put it on.

DON'T USE MURPHY'S OIL SOAP...it will ruin your floors. I love basic coatings floor cleaner. I have two big dogs and it's amazing....

Just don't use Orange glo whatever you do, look on the internet for reviews, awful stuff, works great the first time but leaves a residue that goes dull and cloudy over time and is almost impossible to remove. I won't help if you keep applying it either. I heard windex scrubbed on hands and knees is the only way to remove. Just trying Holloway quick which left an amazing shine but just lightly damp mopped and the floors are all dull already so worried about applying it again as heard its not removeable unless you sand. Sorry can't help but just a friendly warning about the glowing review this old post someone might read
