Removing Soot from Wood Furniture?

I would like to know how to remove soot from wood without damaging the wood. We have Rosewood furniture that has smoky soot on it.

Have you tried Murphy Oil Soap? It's especially made for cleaning wood and I've used it for really old antiques with great success. After cleaning I always use an oily polish to replinish oils I might have removed by cleaning.
