When my son began climbing out of his crib, I took off the front side rail and made it like a daybed. This saved us from buying another bed for a few years.

As long as it isn't too far off the ground or you can lay something soft underneath, this sounds like an excellent way to make a very expensive item last longer. The "something soft underneath" is in case of a midnight "rollout." Save yourself a trip to the ER.
