We have camped for over 30 years and I have used this same method. I put the dishwashing detergent in a large tea kettle full of water which heats on the camp stove while we are eating our meal; I pour the water into the large metal dishpan; I allow the water to boil in the tea kettle so the dishpan can be filled with cooler water to avoid scolding hands or accidents by children.

The rinse dishpan is filled with boiling water also. A small drain board receives the clean dishes, pots and pans and utensils; the large metal dishpan fits over the drain board after it is cleaned out after dishwashing has been done.
