Getting Dog to Use Training Pads?

I've had a Springer spaniel pup for 2 weeks now, but she is starting to drive me nuts! I take her outside in the garden to toilet after meals, sleep, and play, etc. and she always goes wee and poop if needed. During the night she was using her puppy pads for wee, but never poop. Then last night she did 3 wees and 2 poops, but none on the puppy pads! I'm getting frustrated and wonder what I'm doing wrong. Should I buy a crate?

Sorry to tell you that puppy pads are not a good idea. They tell the pup that going in the house is ok, and that the house is also her toilet. Do you crate her at night? I think the bad news is you have to get her up every few hours around the clock till she is older and can hold it longer.Rule of thumb, take the dogs age and add 1. Example 4 months old she should last 5 hours or so. Adjust timing to your pup.

When I first started using them Izzy shredded them. My kitchen looked like it snowed. Izzy now goes on newspaper when she can't go outside. Her crate is only used when I have to leave the house with out her. I have a gate that keeps her in the kitchen when necessary.

I bought the wee wee spray at the pet store and sprayed it on the pads. Worked great.

I bought the Spray at Petsmart ( Nature's) supposed to attract the puppy to the pads. She was doing very good until I sprayed this last night on the pad, she rolled all over the spray on the pad and then ran right over on the floor and immediately peed and hasn't used any pad since. What happened with the Spray ruining it all for my puppy and me?

How do I get a 6 weeks old Stafe to use her training mats, as she's too young to go outside? She hasn't had her jabs yet.

You need to tell her in a happy voice "let's go potty" and put her on the pad. If she sits there and does nothing it is OK. If she does her business, it is great and clapping and hurrays are in order. If the pup starts to pee on the carpet as pups do because they can't hold it long, pick her up in mid stream and take her to the potty pad saying "lets go potty". The important thing is to really praise her.

The high tech thing to do would be to buy a two dollar clicker at Petsmart and load it by clicking and dropping hot dog pieces the size of a green pea on the floor.

When she gets on the potty pad, then click and throw a piece of food. As she walks to get to the potty pad, and just gets her feet on it, then click and throw the hot dog piece. While using the cue word after she gets used to going to the potty pad.

It might take about twenty loads of the clicker to get her to understand that the clicker means a high value treat. After a while you will be able to say let's go potty and she will go to the potty pad. Hopefully, still the click and treat is a good way to teach things.

Also, after eating, napping, running, chewing a bone, or just anything every so often (time her pees for a day and you will know how often she needs to go), put her on the potty pad. If you are using a clicker, click after she is through going potty and praise her really a lot! You can say yes, or good dog, just make it seem like this is the greatest thing in the world because it is! (02/05/2010)

I have a mini Shih Tzu and I was wondering how can I get her to use the pads instead of taking her outside? I got her one that is called Delux training pads, they have a scent on them so that she will go on it. How can I train her to use the pads?

Everytime you think it's about time for her to go, put her on the training pad. Once she does it, she will remember to keep going on them. I would do this more then a couple of times. I trained my dog to them also. (02/12/2009)
