Vacuum Smells Bad?

I have an annoying smell coming from my vacuum. I inserted a new bag, and cleaned the tools. The smell is still there. What else can I do?

Be sure to check to see if you have something caught in the hose or the machine. Lay the hose out straight and shine a light through one end. If the light is blocked, you may have something in the hose. You may be able to push it thru with a dowel or coat hanger.

Check the intake opening on the bottom of the cleaner to see if there are any blockages there. Sometimes the cloth bags get old and smell. If they are washable great if not maybe it is time for a new vacuum. The hoses build up dirt inside. I can take my hose off the machine and lay it in the bath tub with soapy water and all kinds of dirt floats out. those two things usually take care of the problem.

Causes
A number of issues can cause a vacuum cleaner to smell during use. If the vacuum cleaner has foul smelling contents like dried pet urine or excessive dust, odors can escape during use. If the roller head or beater brush becomes stuck, friction can burn the vacuum belt and create an unpleasant smell.

Remedies
Remedies include replacing the vacuum's filter, emptying the contents and using deodorizing products such as baking soda to combat any smells. In addition, remove the beater brush and clean it free of any inhibiting debris.

Considerations
In some cases, a collection of debris or dirt left in the vacuum for a long period of time may require professional service to fully remove the odor. Beater brushes that stick can lead to broken vacuum belts and should be repaired as soon as possible.

You might also try sprinkling some carpet deodorizer and vacuuming that up, or perhaps some baking soda.

imafrayedknott's tip is the best. And easiest. Try putting a good heavy coat of carpet deoderizer down, then vacuuming it up.

Might need to do it more than once, airing the vacuum out between each.

You can try putting either baby powder or baking powder or soda in the bag. That usually helps.
