Holiday Fire Starters

I found this tip at make-stuff.com, it is a great site.

"Fill an empty roll with dried leaves in the fall. Wrap it with newspaper, 4 inches longer than the roll, and twist the ends of the paper, for easy lighting. If you wrap them with decorative paper and put them in a basket they make a nice accessory to a fire place. They can also be covered with Christmas wrapping paper for the holidays. you could also fill the rolls with lint from your dryer - it makes excellent fire starter.

Use only black and white newspaper pages to burn, as magazines or any paper treated with color can create a buildup in the chimney which causes realtime fires in the chimney.

Careful using colored wrapping paper for it contains lead. You have an excellent idea though!! Thank you!

Sometimes starting a fire or replenishing a fire with few coals can be a challenge. We found a way to use some of our larger paper trash to help us, not to mention you reduce refuse. We take our soda boxes and fill them with kindling and light the box to start the fire. A fridge mate 12 pack box can also hold a small log to start you off. Of course any small box will work.

We have also used paper egg cartons filled with saw dust then topped with a layer of wax, cut the egg sections to make 12 fire starters for camping or the fire place. If you wrap them individually, they can also make a nice addition to gift baskets for people with fireplaces. Add a bottle of wine and a good book or video, maybe a few candles to help set the mood and you have a great gift. Or for campers you could add the ingredients for smore's.
