Saving Money on Soda Pop

Whether you call it soda, pop, tonic or coke, we spend a lot of money on this sparkling beverage. Here are some tips for saving money on soda pop as recommended by our ThriftyFun community.

Buy On Sale and Save The Points

We only buy soda when on sale. Since we drink Coke products, we save the "points" and use them for things we'd normally pay money for, like magazine subscriptions.

Refill Bottles With Generic

I buy a 6 pack of 20 oz. bottles ON SALE ONLY. Once those are gone, I wash and refill them with generic 2 liters from Wal-mart. Then I put them back in the fridge like new. My husband, a macho, Pepsi only drinker, barely notices a difference. (When we have company I make sure that all of our "refills" are in a crisper drawer so they do get the new sodas.)

Make Your Own Lemonade/Limeade

Make lemonade or limeade using bottles of concentrate, add sweetener (or sugar) and add water then fill old plastic bottles. Very satisfying taste.

Cheaper and better for you.

Make Your Own Soda Pop

You can buy old fashioned coke syrup, generic club soda, and make your own.

Stock Up When Your Brand Goes On Sale

If you're "brand loyal" and don't want to give that up, stock up when "your" brand is on sale. The store I work at generally has Pepsi products on sale one week, and Coke products the next. Or if the brand is not that important, buy only what is on sale.

Benefits To Not Buying Soda

We rarely buy it, so I guess we save a lot on it! Since I stopped buying it, we sleep better, I have lost weight and I don't worry about the kids having too much of it.

Serve Kids Seltzer Instead

I gave up buying soda pop when my daughter was a child. I would mix various flavors of frozen juice with seltzer, some sliced oranges or berries for garnish and serve that at her parties. The kids loved them because it made them feel so grown up and their parents were happy not to have to deal with all the sugar rush. I do the same for my granddaughters now and their friends love them, too. We haven't had soda pop in the house for many years.

Use Sugar Free Drink Mixes Instead

Use the flavored sugar free drink mixes you add to water. Walmart and Target sell their own brand of them. Also anything you can do to cut back on pop consumption besides being good for your wallet will also benefit your teeth. In addition to saving your tooth enamel, I was told by someone undergoing dialysis that pop pulls the phosphorous out of your bones, so that is another thing to consider healthwise. Remember, it will benefit you long term.

When I buy diet coke/cola (I mostly drink homemade ice tea) - I buy the large Shasta bottles at the 99 Cent Store for - 99 cents! They go fast, so I try to buy several bottles at a time. Another tip - If your soda goes flat, don't toss it - Mix it 1/2 and 1/2 with fresh sparkling soda of the same type to rejuvenate it.

Drink water instead! Sweet fizzy drinks are just laden with sugar and chemicals and are totally unnecessary for a healthy diet, especially if you are trying to live thriftily. For a special treat, occasionally add some fruit juice (freshly squeezed) to the water. People fill their kids up on over-refined, sugary rubbish, then wonder why obesity and type 2 diabetes are reaching epidemic proportions.

Try True Lemon, True Orange or True Lime in water or seltzer or anything else. Yummalicious! Has helped me cut down to only 1 can Diet Coke a day and sometimes not any at all! I love it!

I myself am a former coke/pepsi addict, so I am proud to say that my daughter, 4, has never tasted soda. I aim to keep it from her as long as possible. I still crave soda terribly but I try to drink water or tea and allow myself some juice somethimes. It is still a struggle.

I buy only Sam's Club soda at $0.67 at WalMart. It used to be cheap around 50 cents. I used to be called the 56 cent customer every Saturday night, because I would buy 1 bottle of that brand. It would be my only purchase that night and day. Now I am the 72 cent customer gee guess they will just have to get used to my frugal ways. Hehehe L.O.L. Well anyhow. I used to buy Great Value Cool-Aide from WalMart too at only a $1 for 5 packs unsweetened. We can all be glad there is a WalMart around huh?

My Dad had a service station when I was a very young child.
I saw one of the coke bottles years later. It held five ounces. When I was a young teen, pop came in 8 ounces.
When my kids were in school, and went on an all day field trips, I sent them with a liter bottle; that was in the 1970's. Other than that, we had rootbeer for floats in the summer now and then. We didn't have pop around. Now I notice not only is it made with high-fructose corn syrup, it's used as a replacement for milk and water, and real juice. High fructose corn syrup is used instead of sugar

syrup and there is a pretty firm link developing between high fructose syrup and fat and diabetes. It is put in food for the benefit of large farm interests, not ours.
How about just not buying it?

We only buy soda pop for hubby to take in his lunches. It's cheaper for us buying it that way, other than him buying from the drink machines in the lunchroom at work. We don't buy it for us here at the house. We either drink water or tea, or an occasional powdered drink mix beverage.

I haven't drank soda for years. I make 2 jugs of suntea at a time and use lipton regular tea, but then use 2 bags of a flavored herbal tea in each jug so I do still have a choice of flavors. Orange Spice, Raspberry and Black Cherry teas are good for this. Lemon and Mint teas are great in the summer time.

Hi, you've made a good choice about the sodas. They are sweeten with corn syrup which does not metabolize very good at all. (Any surprise why there are so many obese children) Read the labels on Most products and you will see they use corn syrup. I use Stevia to sweeten our tea. It is a natural sweetner.

I do the points on pepsi and when the kids come keep some store brand that is caffeine free (like rootbeer) in the 2 liter the little one never knows the difference thinks he's getting a treat and behaves much better.

We'll let's look at this from another point of view - your TEETH! All dark colored soda's (except Root Beer) have phosphoric acid in them. This is terrible for your teeth. Think of it, most shower cleaners are made with phosphoric acid! In addition, you can use a can of coke to clean battery terminals. Until our son was in high school, he had never had a dark colored soda. In our house, we only purchase sprite, 7-up, Shasta type sprite, etc. ONLY when it's on sale or a very low price. It is not a daily beverage in our lifestyle. Sports drinks are also terrible for your children's teeth as well. PS: Dark colored soda's are a great science project for your children with a tooth in them. See how long it takes to completely eat the tooth. Yuk!

For got to mention - Don't REFILL your PET water bottles. Per snopes.com, the PET water bottles are intended for one time use.

I save money on soda by not buying it. No food value there. Sugar and carbonate bad for your teeth. If you use diet, that's worse. Pregnant women and children should not drink it. Every time you drink a soda you throw the cost of it out the window. Not thrifty and not healthy.

I drink very little soda pop anymore. I make a pot of tea in the morning & drink maybe one or two cups. Then save the rest for lunch or dinner. But every once in a while I do by soda (in the cans) on sale. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep the fizz once it's open? Most of the time I do not want to drink the whole can but if I let it sit it goes flat even overnight.

If you're a soda addict like me, and on limited funds, consider saving your 20 and 24 oz. soda bottles. Instead of purchasing more 6 packs of the bottles, instead invest in a few 2 liter bottles of soda. Fill the bottles with the soda, seal tightly and store in the refrigerator. I only do one 2 liter bottle at a time, so the soda keeps longer. You should be able to fill about 3 20 oz. bottles with one 2 liter bottle.
