Keep Cat From Walking on My Roof?

I have an elderly neighbor that leaves his door open at night for his beloved cat. I know that his cat is a handful, his drapes are shredded!

The problem is the cat climbs on my roof at night. My roof is flat and it is noisy and wakes me up. I then have a hard time going back to sleep.

I tried the gallon water jugs in the yard. I do get up and try to hose the cat, but he has caught on to me.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Go to your local home improvement center and get a cheap outside light with a motion sensor on it and a lawn sprinkling timing device that you attach to your outside faucet. You're ahead of me already aren't you?
Temporarily mount this light fixture at the spot where the cat obtains access to the roof. Remove the light bulb and install a screw-in socket in it's place. Plug in the timer and set it for the shortest sprinkle cycle, attach the hose to a sprinkler on the roof and turn the water on at the faucet. Then when the cat jumps up on the roof, the motion sensor will turn the sprinkler on, the cat jumps off and, after a few of those treatments, you can relax. Cats are smart and will avoid getting a bath from then on. Hope this helps.

Not true! My neighbors cat has been chased out of my yard a bunch of times. He runs on my roof at night and has actually fallen off a few times.

He's dumb. Keeps coming back no matter what!

Cats dislike the smell of citrus. Place oranges, lemons, or grapefruit (whole or peels), and scatter them on the roof. If you can get up there you can also spray the area with any lemon or citrus scented air spray directly onto the roof itself.

Please do not use moth balls. Moth balls are toxic for cats and although I know you don't enjoy its visits I am sure you would not like to kill it. Moth balls can kill or seriously affect a cat causing if not death, expensive vet bills which your neighbour could try to claim from you. Good luck. You may have to replace citrus from time to time as they become dried out.

Not true! When my kitty was alive, she used to love eating the citrus. Her vet use to get a kick out of her.

Cats do not like the smell of moth balls. I was told once that you can place a styrofoam cup in your gardens full of moth balls and this will help keep them from using the gardens as litterboxes. Maybe you could strategically place them on your roof.

Maybe get a few milk jugs and place a rock in the bottom of each one to keep them from blowing away and pour moth balls on top of the rock. You may only need one or two near the area the cat gets up onto the roof.

I live in the tropics and peels would clog my gutters and moth balls would kill my turtles the hose motion detector seems like a good idea but I have tin vaulted ceilings that rise from 3 to 5 meters and we have birds that lived and some visit since the cat came and started killing them. The owner doesnt care or do anything. Because the roof is tin it sounds very loud. Can I electrify my roof to zap them buggers off without killing them. Also will a bb gun scare or kill a cat.

Please do not use a BB gun on a cat. It could kill or seriously injure a cat or any small animal.

My cat has been on my & neighbor's roofs 5x in 2 months since I moved. Ive had to rescue him each time but this time is the last. He sits up there meowing a death meow. Well, I'm the one suffering since he shredded my arm into a bloody mess when i got him down.

Had to have a rum shot to numb the pain. Next time, he's on his own, rain or shine. I did cut his nails though. Maybe he'll climb less. Now, he's all trying to love on me. Aww...cat owners are suckers. Dogs rule.

Try chicken wire as a wall to stop him from jumping from wall or shed to roof. Its lightweight, allows wind to pass through but keeps it shape. Has to be placed right on the edge of the roof (cats only need a few inches to land). Make sure it is tall enough they cant just jump over from the wall. They are amazing athletes!
