Wildlife: Pileated Woodie

This is our resident pileated woodie who comes once a day to the feeder. A young one is also coming now.

We have pileated woodpeckers too. I love them. They do make a mess though of our big elms (the ones we have left that is). And the noise they make when drilling into a tree is awesome. Did you know that woodpeckers curl their tounges around their brains to protect them when they hammer away at a tree? Awesome. Google it if you don't believe me. How did that come about? A few headaches several eons ago maybe :)

We also have a yellow bellied sap sucker, it looks a bit like a downy or a harrie. It likes to drill on metal, ladders, screen doors, tv towers etc. You can hear them a mile away, usually around 5:00 a.m.

Very cool. I'd love to see one of these in my yard.
