How Do I Keep My Hair Color from Fading?

I colour my hair red and it always looks great for the first few days, but then the colour fades. I have used different brands and it makes no difference. My hair is oily so I have to wash it every day. Any tips how to prevent the fading?

Go to an art supply store and get a permanent ink such as India ink,in a color close to your own. Mix about 20 drops into 1 cup of shampoo, and use it when you wash your hair. It is subtle and wont radically change your color, but works as a "booster" for your color.

I'm a retired hair-dresser. If you go to a Sally Beauty supply store they have shampoo for red hair, it is red in color. I think the brand name is "Quantum". Years ago I had my hair red and I always used this type of shampoo and it really helped.

Now I have my hair blonde to cut down on the grey/color line. I still use this red shampoo because with my hair color it gives me a strawberry blond color that I love!

My aunt was a hairdresser for over 60 years. She always kept her hair colored red. What she didn't do was use shampoo on it very often, Instead, she just ran cool water through her hair and massaged it to rinse it. Remember it's your scalp that gets oily, not your hair.

Red hair color is known to fade quickly. Washing frequently also makes the hair color fade. All you can do is use a shampoo/conditioner for colored hair, but IMO they don't make much difference.

I only use shampoos that are sulfate free.

I wait as long as I can, 4-5 days before I color my hair.

Then I wait at least 4 days to a week before I wash my hair.

I use conditioners that came with the package of hair dye, making sure I put some on my roots because the color fades there too. I only used to put conditioner on my ends! go figure.

Have you tried any of those shampoos and conditioners specifically made for people with red hair?

You might go to a Sally Beauty Supply shop and ask if there is anyone there who is a professional. If yes, I trust them to give me good advice.

Stay out of the sun and don't go out without a hat covering all of your hair.

Don't dunk your head in swimming pools, chlorine. Same with salt water. if you do, rinse your hair really, really, well as soon as possible.

Good luck. I was red a few times and OliveOyl is right, red fades fast.

I've had fire engine red streaks put into my hair a few times. Red fades/bleeds. I find the same thing happens with laundry. I wash reds by themselves or maybe with some black clothes, because I've had red bleed onto other clothes before. I've been told to use cold water when washing hair that's been dyed red. It's okay in the summer, but no fun in the winter. I've also gotten some special shampoo that looks like blood to help put a little color back in whenever I wash. I think it was from Color Me Sexy (but there are others). I got mine at Ulta. There are also conditioners that have red color in them, to help keep the color bright.

I know you say your hair is oily so you have to wash every day, have you tried just rinsing with cool (or, as I was told, cold) water? It might be worth trying one weekend, so see if maybe just rinsing would help with the oiliness, but keep the shampoo from washing away your color so quickly.

Best of luck to you! I would love the bright red streaks peeking out here and there, and then they'd quickly start to fade. Then they weren't so much fun anymore. I hope you find something that works for you!

Use a color safe shampoo. I use one by Redken.

I'm not sure if this is your situation, but it was mine. My hair is naturally auburn, and I finally had enough gray that it was time to start covering. I tried several different shades and brands of auburn, and they all started out garish and fake-looking, only to fade out to brass after a couple of weeks. Didn't matter what shampoo and conditioner I used, and I only wash my hair twice a week anyway.

In desperation, I tried a medium, neutral brown dye. I thought I was giving up auburn and would just have to get used to brown hair, and at first, it looked like that was going to be the case. But after a couple of shampoos, the color lightened out to a gorgeous auburn that was very close to my natural color, only prettier. There was never any brass. I guess my natural color shows through the brown somehow, because there is not the least bit of red or gold in the dye shade I'm using.

Yes, the frequent shampooing is one thing that contributes to red color fading, another is using a dandruff shampoo. I color mine light auburn using Loreal and I use color safe shampoo and conditioners of any brand and mine looks fine until my touch up is due.

Ask your hairdresser for a filler before she puts in the color. What it does is fills the hair with product and gives extra insurance that it should cover better.

Also do not shampoo every day, steam your hair and scalp in shower, then blow dry slightly. Unless your a construction worker! Ha ha
