Tip for Knowing Whether the Dishwasher Has Been Run

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 169 Posts

My DH suggested this one and it makes a lot of sense to me. Instead of trying to remember whether or not the dishwasher is "clean", when he's here alone and has a load too small to run right away, he will put the bottle of dishwasher liquid in the rack with the dishes. If it's not there we know it has been run. I've started doing that too and it's been a big help.

Another idea for this same problem:

Our previous house had a dishwasher with a lever that locked and unlocked--my husband and I had an agreement that if the dishes were clean, we would leave the dishwasher locked until we were ready to empty it. Therefore, if the lever was locked, the dishes inside were clean. If the lever was unlocked, it was understood that you should load your dirty dishes into the dishwasher. That worked great.

Well, our current house has a dishwasher that has no indicator on it for whether the dishes are clean or dirty (& no lever)--after much frustration, I finally grabbed a washable marker & started writing "dirty" inside the door of the dishwasher after I unload it. As long as I remember to write it, it works great & washes out of the dishwasher each time.

Hope that tip helps someone out there!

We put a teddy bear magnet that normally is on the refrigerator on the dishwasher when we start the wash cycle. This way everyone knows the dishes are clean and the kids know they're ready to be put away.

Another tip, which I wish I had thought of, is to fill the soap dispenser when you begin to load the dishes. There will only be soap in the dispenser if the dishes are dirty --- a really easy way to know.

I can just tell when I look in the dishwasher whether they are clean or not. I don't run it if it's not full either so if I look in and it's only partially full, I know I haven't run it and the dishes are dirty. My dishwasher also has a light that stays lit on the panel when the cycle is finished that says clean....it stays lit only till you open the dishwasher tho.

My husband came home from work early today and then while I was out running errands, he was so nice and emptied the dishwasher and reloaded it and ran it! I was very surprised and grateful. I had a lot of dirty dishes pile up because I had a clogged sink drain. Hubby managed to finally fix that tho when we thought we might need to call in a plumber. I am glad to have a handy hubby!

Wow. Maybe I shouldn't admit it but I can tell if mine has been run because the dishes are dirty if it hasn't been. I run mine once a day at night. If there is room for a few more dishes too bad.

This works for me because it usually is almost full and I cannot stand to have left over dirty dishes that won't fit in. I wash all my pots and pans in there too.
