Feed Birds Leftover Bread In Winter

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 228 Posts

Make some really good friends this winter of the birds that visit your yard or nest nearby. With all the snow we have and more to come, the birds (with no help from their people friends) have a hard time. Toss leftover bread, cake, broken down chips or other leftovers out to them. They will love you for it.

You could also turn the bird treat into a quick craft for kids by coating an apple or a pinecone with peanut butter and then rolling in crumbs or feed! Then, stand silently out of the way with your camera ready and you will love the photo ops!

Although the apples, peanut butter and feed are great ideas for the birds, the bread is not. Bread does not have nutritional value for birds.

If a small bird fills up with bread on a cold winters evening it may not survive till morning as it will not have gained enough energy from the bread to fend of the cold. The bread won't provide the necessary protein and fats necessary to keep their little body warm.

Save the stale bread for your meatloaf.

Yes, you are right about bread not being healthy enough for birds... especially in winter! Please DO NOT feed bread to them! THANK YOU!

Very bad advice to feed bread or cake to birds in the winter. The empty calories in these foods can actually kill them. Stick to seeds and nuts and suet.

Please ***DON'T*** feed bread, cake, crackers, chips or other human snacks to any birds, geese, ducks, etc.

Google "angel wing" to see an example of how it kills birds.

Omnivorous birds can be fed:

  • Cracked corn
  • Wheat, barley, or similar grains
  • Oats (uncooked, and not the instant kind with sugar)
  • Rice
  • Chopped lettuce or other greens or salad mixes
  • Vegetable trimmings or peels (chopped into small pieces)
  • Milo seed
  • Birdseed (any type or mix)
  • Grapes (cut in half or quartered if very large)
  • Nut hearts or pieces (any type but without salt, coatings, or flavoring)
  • Frozen peas or corn (defrosted, no need to cook)
  • Earthworms (fishing bait or dug from the garden)
  • Mealworms (fresh or dried)

Your list is good except the rice. You should stipulate COOKED RICE. If birds eat uncooked rice grains, it can swell up in them and at the least, cause severe bloat, and at worst.....death.

NEVER feed bread, chips, cake and similar stuff to birds of ANY kind. These foods are full of empty calories, sugar and preservatives that are NOT good for any bird. Yes, it fills them up, but at the cost of nutritional and natural foods they SHOULD be eating. Those foods are NOT only NOT good for them, but in some cases, can actually kill birds with bloat.

By feeding birds these kinds of human food, you prevent the birds from eating what they should that gives them proper nutrition. These human foods can actually sicken and kill birds.

Cats can also stand silently to catch the birds. To avoid feeding the cats with birds do not toss any food on the ground but quickly make a one or two meter high stand for the birds to feed on top of it. If possible set this stand under a tree to protect the birds from a possible bird of preys attack. If possible do not feed birds with salty food especially chips. Seeds remain the best food for them including the cheapest like, sunflower or pumpkin seeds or canned chickpeas.
