Supplies:

  • acrylic paint
  • wooden key cut out
  • sandpaper
  • paint brushes
  • varnish

Instructions:

I bought the wooden key at Wal-Mart (craft section) for a few bucks. I wanted something to put in our camper to hang the keys on. Picture one is the before. Before paint, sanding, etc. Wooden Key Hanger

  1. Remove the gold-tone key hooks. They just twist out.

  2. Sand all rough edges. (I got a package of sandpaper at our local Dollar General for a few dollars). Wooden Key Hanger

  3. Paint the entire surface and the edges (you don't really have to worry about the back). Wait for it to dry. (If you are like me and too excited to let it air dry, grab your hair dryer and set it to cool, but high air and aim it at your key until dry. Wait about 15 more minutes before painting on your design. Sometimes the top layer of paint is dry, but underneath is not). Wooden Key Hanger

  4. Paint something on your key to make it personalized to your family. Or you can add stickers to it; be creative. It's yours. Use a Sharpie for wording. If you mess up, just paint back over it and start over again.

  5. Make sure everything is dry before adding the varnish (if not, all your paint/wording will run). Varnish helps to keep your art from scratching off by usual wear and tear. Varnish comes in different types. Check them out.

You are done. Hang it up or wrap it up and give it as a gift to someone.

Editor's Note: If you have the tools, you could cut your own wooden key out of scrap wood, making this craft truly frugal.
