I've been through the same, only it was me with the cancer and my partner taking wonderful care of me. I used knitting as a great meditative, calming, distraction from the stress, pain, and worry. Perhaps you could teach her! Regarding the newsboy cap. I found a great one called "kap" on the berrocco site. It can be pulled down to cover more head area. I found a more traditional one with matching fingerless gloves on the purple kitty site. Just search for purple kitty, and click on hat patterns which appears in a list under the search term purple kitty yarns and needlework, then page down a few times until you see the hats.
