Don't bank at banks. Bank at credit unions whenever possible. When you join a credit union you are a member and the free services abound.

At my credit union they will wire money to another party for free.
They often have lower interest rates on credit cards and they offer interest bearing savings and checking accounts.
Checks are less expensive, too.
