Save Money Cooling Your Home?

Would a dehumidifier reduce air conditioning operating costs? I heard a rumor that it does reduce the power bill for air conditioning. The cost reduction is the result, both of reducing moisture and the drier air makes it more comfortable. Then we could set our thermostat for a higher temperature.

We live in western NC where it is very humid and we do have a dehumidifier to take the moisture out of the air AND "it does work"! We live in an over 1200 sq ft house and our power bill is less then $30 a week and this is running our central air at 72 degrees 24/7! Try it and you won't be sorry.

What it does is make you feel more comfortable so you can set the thermostat warmer and still feel cool.

Tips for saving money cooling your home this summer. Post your ideas.

Answers:

Your Fan Setting on the Air Conditioner

Set the fan on your central air conditioner to "on" instead of "auto", because it will circulate the air continuously. That way and it will keep the temperature more even throughout the house. It will also help to dehumidify the house.

Clean the Air Conditioner

Clean your central air conditioner with a garden hose to help maintain it. Just remember to shut off the power at the fuse or breaker box first.

Keeping the House Cool

Another way to help keep cool this summer is to use ceiling and box fans to help circulate the air throughout the house. It's also an important thing to remember to make sure your attic is well ventilated, too.

Plant a Tree

One of the best ways to help your cooling costs this summer is to plant a tree. We have 3 large trees in our yard and they are not only beautiful, but they also provide some very welcome shade, especially in the hot summer months. They say that by planting a tree you can reduce your cooling costs by 25%. For the best results place a leafy shade tree to the south and west and evergreen type trees to the north.
