To keep kids entertained, look for free events. Sometimes programs offer 1 free class with no obligation. Gymboree, Little Gym, and Stroller Strides do this. Additionally, some churches have open play times for a minimal fee. If a church near you doesn't, see if your church might be willing to do that. All you need is a multipurpose room and some toys. The kids love it!

Check with your local libraries. Ours has many free events for kids and the whole family. They also have free computer classes for adults and ESL help.
You can also check at your local YMCA, especially if you have pre-teens or teens. Our local Y has a multi-purpose room with all sorts of activities, including foosball and pool, I think. You might check to make sure whether your kid(s) need(s) a membership, however.
