Value of Sylvania Console Stereo System?

September 11, 2020

A Sylvania record player cabinet.Okay so I've looked for hours but no matter how hard I look, I've only been able to find it one place. I have a 1971 Mediterranean Sylvania record player cabinet (style sc378p) but the only place I can find it is a 1971 Sylvania brochure. I need to know how rare it is, what it's worth if it's worth anything, and where I can go to either restore it or buy parts for it. It's made of oak walnut and it's supposed to have a Garrard 3500 automatic turntable 4 speed. Whatever information you can get me where I can get parts, what it's worth, anything like that, please let me know.

Another person here on Thrifty Fun was asking about a similar unit he had found when he was cleaning out his garage. It appears that this is not a very popular unit and does not sell for a high value. www.thriftyfun.com/Value-of-Sylvania-Console-Stereo...

One way to find the parts you are looking for to restore this unit is on eBay if you enter Sylvania Record Player Parts in the search bar it will give you information like this - www.ebay.com/.../i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524...

I tried to find a book on this and not just the brochure that you have located. I did find that too. I can't find any other information on this at all. I fear that your next step is to join a few old radio/stereo clubs forums online and talk with the people there. They can help you out and let you know how to start to restore this unit. Maybe, somebody, there has a schematic on this unit they can share with you to help you restore it.

It appears you are saying that you have a 'gutted' 1971 Sylvania Phonograph console cabinet that you wish to restore with maybe original components?

It is not unusual to not be able to find an exact model of these items as there were so many styles produced it would take forever to show everyone unless you can find a site dedicated to that one brand.
Also, not all models were that popular so you may have trouble locating yours. However, there are many sites that you can ask questions and maybe learn a little from each one.
This will take a lot of time joining sites and asking questions but be sure to keep a record of each site and what information they supply.
I have listed some sites but there are more I'm sure.

Cool to see it in its original splendor in the brochure! Those were the days!!

Sadly the console stereos in most parts of the US are a dime a dozen. Where the money is if you have all the parts and it works and you piece it out and sell of...like the turntable arm, motor, needles etc. That is where the selling money is found.

If yours has none of the working parts, unless you have a huge sentimental attachment to it and want to spend a lot to bring it back to its original splendor, I would try to sell of the cabinet for whatever someone would take to take it away--depending on where you are, that could be as low as $5 and maybe up to $20.

There are craftspeople who will turn these into upcycled pieces. Like dog beds (although that is more the old TV cases), bars, TV stands toy boxes, china low rise buffets, etc. They want to get them cheap, strip them down and upcycle.

Pinterest is full of ideas if you were game to upcycle!! Some of the upcycled pieces if well done and clever, can get into the hundreds!!

I was cleaning out my barn and came across this floor model record player. I tried to look up the model number on the back, but couldn't find it.

Does anyone know what this would be worth and how I can go about selling it?

Neat find!! Unfortunately this is one of the least popular in today's resale world and I have seen them sit unsold for months or sell as low as $10-$20. So sad!

Now I can tell you the parts sell and if you are handy and if you can take it all apart and show that the pieces work, it is worth way more for parts than it is as a whole.

Put Sylvania turntable parts into eBay search and on any given day the SOLD prices will give you today's current market value. This is the case because people that do love them, hold on to them and want original parts (vs after market) to fix theirs.

If you are just going to sell it your best best would be to find a vintage shop that will take it, have them sell it for you on consignment (if they will even take it--some don't) or if they buy outright, go that route.

You could always put it on Facebook Marketplace (your local Sale Want Trade groups are best). The challenge with that is people will be traipsing through your house to look at it.

If you sell at a flea market or yard sale, take it and have it running if you can and see if you can sell it that way.

Post back what you decide. Please note the prices are regional, and there are still some places where there is a demand and you can fetch a little more. Where I am in Pittsburgh, you can't give them away. The value I gave you is a national average.

Only a few brands will sell for very much and even when sold, we have no idea how long they have been listed for sale but most important, these will be 'local pick up only' and that means one may sell in one city but has be hauled to the dump in another.
You can always list it on several local site such as Craigslist, Nextdoor.com, LetGo, OfferUp and see if it will sell in your area.
You will have to know what is working and not working - give a good description, have several good pictures, show measurements, and have it in an area that you do not mind strangers coming in to see it.

With these sites you can start your price at whatever you desire and lower it if no one shows and interest.
May be some trouble but that is about the only way to sell this type of console.
There is not a lot of history available about the dates these were made but the popular ones were made in the 60's and this one does not appear to be in the decade.

The record player was made in the late 50s to early 60s. These types of stereo units normally sell for around $50-100 depending on if they are working or not. If you live in an area that people invest in these units you can normally sell them for a higher value. I have seen some of them sell for as low as $10 and as high as $100. One thing that I find very helpful when pricing this unit is to join a few older radio/stereo forums and post the unit there. People there are radio buffs and know so much about these old units. They can give you an idea if your unit is highly sought after or it is just a unit a collector will pay very little for just to add to his collection.
