RE: Getting Rid of Fleas

By blazincopper 05/16/2012

table salt and baking soda work well. Sprinkle one or both on floors, carper and furniture and let sit overnight then vacuum up. This makes the fleas dry up and die. Do it several times a week as the eggs hatch and soon you will be flea free.

I agree with the previous post. This is very likely a bladder infection. It is a very very painful condition, so see your Vet ASAP. After she has been treated for her condition, clean the spot on the desk with vinegar or an enzyme soak to get rid of the odor so she wont be tempted to return. Bladder infections can recur so be on the watch for this behavior in the future. It will be a reason for a return to the Vet.

RE: Acne Treatment

By Lizzyanny 05/16/2012

My daughter had terrible acne for many years. We went to Dermatologists and she used medications and creams. It was really affecting her life. She finally went to a new Dermatologist who recommended Accutane. This is a problematic drug with many very serious side effects.

Because my daughter was so desperate and this new Dermatologist was so respected, I gave my permission for her to have the drug. It worked. She did two courses of the drug. Her skin is flawless now. She had to have monthly pregnancy tests because the drug causes birth defects. Was it worth it? Yes.

And thank you for all of the photos for instruction! Wish I had better kitchen lighting and uncrowded counter space or even a dining table to be able to do that :-(

RE: Healthy Living Tips To Keep Weight Off

By speakeasy 05/16/2012

You forgot an important one - sleep! You need a minimum of 7 hours sleep to maintain your weight or lose weight.

When I was losing weight I found that some weeks I lost more than others even thought the food I ate and amount of exercise stayed the same. I started taking a look at every thing that might possible have an effect and I found that weeks where I got more sleep, I lost double or more weight that week. Started going to bed a little earlier and setting the alarm a little later and it made a big difference.

Now maintaining my loss and I find the same thing. If something happens and I don't get enough sleep, my weight starts to creep back up.

RE: Puppy Backsliding on House Training

By piwacket 05/16/2012

If she is using her puppy pads that's good. I have a ChiPom that is now 1 year old that did the outside or inside, what I did was place a couple puppy pads near my bedroom in the hallway. I wanted her to know where they were just in case she didn't get outside in time.

When she used the papers or even go outside I made a big deal out of it by giving her a treat (chicken jerky around a chew-stick). I dry my own chicken into pieces & wrap some around the rawhide chew-sticks, as she now goes outside 3/4 of the time & when we don't make it, she uses her papers and she gets a big treat. It takes patience. Good Luck.

She may have a bladder or kidney infection. That's her way of telling you that somethings not right with her. Please take her to your vet and have her checked out. I had a female cat that started peeing on our leather sofa and when I looked, I noticed some blood in the urine. The vet gave me some pills and it cleared right up. Good luck.

Go to a doctor. There are good medications to treat acne - stuff that actually works! If home remedies actually worked, no one would have acne!

If you have tried all the over the counter products that can be purchased at the drug store, and used them faithfully, then it is time to get medication. There is no need to suffer and have your skin scarred.

RE: Clothing Dye Bleed onto Lighter Part of Dress

By Omanana 05/16/2012

Did the dress air dry or dryer dry? If dryer dried, the stain may be set. Since it is unwearable as is, you could try soaking it in a solution of powder dishwasher detergent and lukewarm water. Mix 1 cup detergent into enough water to keep the dress submerged overnight. Weigh it down with a plate on top in the container if needed. Then rinse well and air dry. If it helped but was not completely successful, repeat.

If you don't have a dishwasher, the el cheapo brand from the dollar store works fine. You also could try laundering the dress as usual by itself with 2-3 Shout Color Catcher Sheets. The box says use 1 but I have found that more seem to work better. This product can be found in the detergent aisle at the supermarket. Hope one of these helps.

Try moving it in a different location away from where the moss is growing, the moss is taking all the nutrients away from tree. After you dig up the tree get as much of the dirt out of the roots that you can and then use some garden soil, and water for 7 days straight till it takes root. After about 7 months add some fertilizer like bone meal or blood meal. Good luck! Lilacs are my favorite flower and I wish they bloomed all summer long but they don't.

RE: Give Out One Coloring Page at a Time

By Teresa Kay 05/15/2012

I have been a daycare teacher for 22 years and we put a couple of coloring books in their art center and teach them that they have to pick out one page they want to color and then take the book to a teacher and have her tear it out. This way they can color what they want. They color the front and back.

We also get our books at the dollar store or walmart at a cheap price. sometimes parents donate them. Of course the age of a child depends on how much time they will spend on coloring. Younger children have a shorter attention span so they don't color as long, just be patient with them and make sure you teach them to color in coloring book and no where else.

They took two of the plastic tote drawers and purchased the two or three lego squares (don't remember exactly how many they did use, and the attached the lego squares to a piece of plywood, and cut it the width of the drawers, and just placed it on top of them. A chair sets easily between the two and the drawers have the small baskets in them to keep the legos sorted by sizes, colors etc. They got the idea from familyfun.com. It was very easy to make and looks great in Chloe's room.

Go to a department store makeup counter and ask for suggestions on how to do your brows. And if all else fails, hold your head up high and go about your life. We don't all look the same.

If you decide to wash the leather make sure it is safe, saddle soap or a gentle leather specific cleaner and water then let it completely air dry, then treat with a good leather treatment (check with a reputable shoe repair place).

This breed is great. We've had 4 over 35 years. Easy to train, very smart, strong willed but they are like a large dog in a small body. As far as small children go, if they are raised around small children they are fine. It is when they aren't used to the quick movements of small children that they tend to react because they are scared.

There are special eyebrow tinting kits available at beauty supply stores (such as Sally Beauty Supply) that you could use. It's quick and easy and lasts anywhere from three to six weeks (depends on each individuals facial cleansing products used, amount of time in the sun, etc). I've always used Revlon's 'Roux' brand but there are other kits available. I think another brand name is Godefroy. Just choose a color one or two shades lighter than your hair color.

I'd like to add I hope you will be more kind and confident with yourself regarding your eyebrows and hairline. Two people come to mind regarding wearing their natural lack of attributes (well, what society says are so called lack of attributes) as a badge of honor. Whoopie Goldberg has invisible eyebrows and Sade has an incredibly high hairline and I personally think those attributes make them both look endearing and beautiful because of their confidence! Will add a couple photos here in hopes you will see what I mean :-)

RE: Removing Ink Stains from Carpet

By fuzzytufts 05/15/2012

after readin all the ways folks remove ink from carpets I feel lucky to have had a friend help me. First ball point pens aren't usually permanent ink and by itself use hairspray. You spray let dry a minute or so and with a paper towel or clean soft absorbent cloth lightly scrub then respray till all gone.

This works. I carried an old printer home on my car carpet and it leaked a lot of in on it. Did this and you couldn't even see a mark of it left. If you have permanent ink and do it right away it will work too.

You said new cabinets, if you have a piece of the wood use your stain over it and then lightly sand it after dry and in different portions of it try different stains till you get the color expected. Golden oak will produce a slightly orange color as you describe in some stains. Depending on what your wood is will affect the color. Hope this helps. Varathane itself is a clear non yellowing coating that I use by itself so my wood burning doesn't yellow over time. This only leaves what they call summer oak and apparently it and your wood absorbed more orangey color.

RE: Ground Moles

By susanmajp 05/15/2012

First of all, moles do not eat only grubs - grubs are only one source of their food. So getting rid of grubs will not necessarily get rid of the moles - that would be way too easy. Nor will using whirly-gigs/pinwheels, nor the solar mole chasers that make noise and vibrate, nor will chewing gum, nor will human hair, or dirty cat litter, nor the mole granules/ pellets, not will urine (yes, I tried this too), and the castor oil only slows them down.

My cats have killed 12 so far this spring, but they can't keep up either. The professional was at least honest. He said that with so many in the neighborhood, he couldn't keep them away even if he got all of ours.

For the record, moles are a horrendous nuisance. My lawn have tunnels so bad that we have sprained our ankles trying to walk through it to try to attempt to cut grass and we have fallen, leaving us with large medical bills. They like earthworms and have invaded my garden for the last 5 years.

What most people don't know is that moles will also eat plant roots when it is dry and where I live, it is dry in the summer. So my entire vegetable garden and all our years of landscaping is gone - dead. Their tunnels go through the roots so when you water your garden, the water runs into the tunnels and the plants do not get it, so they die.

Traps don't catch too many and moles reproduce quickly. We've found them nesting deep under my compost bins - they like the warmth during the winter. It is also illegal in many areas to trap and relocate pests like racoons, possums, and moles. Just because something worked for 1 or 2, does not mean it will work for someone with a big problem.

So please (and I mean no disrespect to anyone) do not make an arrogant statement like, "they're actually good for lawns" or "just get rid of your the," because this is like telling telling someone who has had their home destroyed by a tornado to just tidy up their yard and they'll feel better.

No one will even look at homes in my neighborhood because the moles have destroyed the yards so badly. Insurance will not cover their destruction - landscaping, tearing up lawns, etc, and quite frankly, it hurts to see what you've worked for, lost.

The only thing that really works is nail polish remover. I know that sounds terrible, but I use it everytime I get my hair done. Just dip a Qtip or cotton ball or an old washcloth in the remover and gently rub on the areas that are stained by the dye. Don't rub too hard. When you're finished removing the unwanted dye, wash the area with soap and water. Better yet, shampoo the hair. Hope this helps.

RE: Packing Peanuts For House Plants

By JazzyMe 05/14/2012

Yes. Remove them from the pot and all the soil. Toss it in a hazardous waste receptacle. Wash the pot 1st with hot water and soap. Then use a scrub brush and scrub the inside vigorously with vinegar. Sprinkle in some baking soda, scrub some more.

Wash again with just hot water (no soap). Let dry in hot sun. Take plant and gently rinse off ALL the soil, you now have a bare-root plant. Trim off any really sick looking branches and leaves closely so there are no little "nubs". Fill the pot with "Potting Mix", not "Garden Soil" as Potting soil is designed for potted plants.

Garden soil is fine, but Potting Mix has special things that help both in maintaining water in the soil yet designed to let excess drain away properly. Also for an ill plant it is fortified with a low/gentle level of fertilizer for starting plants off on a new life. If you want something for drainage in the bottom of the pot, use clean pebbles about twice the size of peas. These can also be bought at the nursery.

RE: Acne Treatment

By sml9 05/14/2012

Hi Miriam,

Thought I could be helpful with this question: I have been a fashion model for almost 6 years and maintaining beautiful skin is very important to my job. Over the years I've gotten some great beauty tips from fellow models.

I don't know how old your daughter is, but I suffered from pretty bad acne from 13 years old to about 17 years old (when I finally found the solution). I tried all drugstore products and even went to dermatologists over the years, and they either didn't work, worked temporarily, and almost all dried out my skin horribly. The problem is all these products just target the surface of your skin and not the source of the acne which is much deeper under you skin.

When I signed with an agency, they told me to get SilkPeel Microdermabrasion at a good dermatologist, not a spa (and so many models I talk to swear by this). It is extremely pricey for one session (mine was $200, but they range from $100-$200). For microdermabrasion, they recommend that you do 4-6 sessions, a month between each session, for long term results.

Well I saw immediate results after the first one, then I went in for a 2nd session one month later, and had nearly flawless skin (even my acne scars were fading), so I did a 3rd session and my skin was completely acne free, acne scar free, and my skin was glowing! I never went for a 4th like they recommended, and the most amazing thing was that my skin was flawless for 4 years after that! I just stuck with organic/ natural face wash after that and argan oil at night time as a moisturizer.

In the end the $200x3 = $600 was well worth the money to have my acne disappear, my scars go away, and have amazing skin for 4 years with barely any upkeep. My parents spent far more money on different drugstore acne products, dermatologist appointments, dermatologist recommended creams & gels... these all added up to a lot more $$ over time and never gave me clear skin!

I have advised this to several of my "non-model" friends with acne to do this, and they have all had equally amazing results.

AND the plus is that if you start microdermabrasion at an early age (pre-wrinkles), it's the best anti-aging treatment out there. Cindy Crawford is said to have started at 20, doing it once a year. I do it about once every 2 years now to maintain my skin.

Hope this helps your daughter!

RE: Can you get whiter skin?

By sml9 05/14/2012

I randomly came across this post and after skimming the comments, decided to post some actual product advice from my personal experience of getting my skin pale, FAST.

I have been a professional fashion model for almost 5 years now, and with the jobs comes a lot of hair coloring, and believe it or not: skin coloring... depending on what country you are working in. In America/ Europe, tan skin is desirable so you see "build a tan" lotions everywhere! However, in Asia, very pale skin is desirable and considered "beautiful".

So when I went to model in Asia and was constantly told they couldn't book me because I was too "tan", I realized I had to get very pale in a matter of weeks since my job bookings depended on it! I started asking the other models and researching how to whiten my skin without bleaching it because that is horrible for you.

The funny thing is that just as L'oreal, Nivea, Revlon etc, all have "build a tan" lotions in America.... the same big brands all have "whitening" lotions and face scrubs, and face washes in Asia. They simply don't sell them in America & elsewhere because of the market differences.

It took me about 4 weeks of using an exfoliating sponge daily with Nivea Whitening body wash then using Ponds Whitening body Lotion, and for my face using some whitening face scrub, and Pond's whitening night cream.... I was so pale, I couldn't believe it. They also even sell SPF + whitening there (yes, while you are being protected by SPF, it is keeping your skin light too)!

So my advice: Go to your local Asian supermarket/ store! China towns, Japan towns; they are everywhere! And most of the supermarkets carry these whitening products, and most of the areas even have beauty shops stocked full of Plus Whitening products. It might be a little pricier since they are shipped overseas, but well worth it if that is what you are looking for.

I am confident that these types of products will work on black skin, Indian skin, any dark skin etc.... because if the "build a tan" lotions work for people, so do the "get white" lotions. And they are no more "harmful" for you than any other basic lotion from the same brands.

Hope this helps!

RE: Making a Lego Table

By fatboyslimsmom 05/14/2012

I have never made one, and never could afford a 'real' Lego table for the boys, wishing I had thought of making one!
It would be great if you could find an old end table with either a drawer or an under cabinet, or both, paint in Lego colors, and then glue the bases down (or use velcro attachement, in case you want to remove them later).
I think it would come out great!
Best of luck to you!

RE: Acne Treatment

By fatboyslimsmom 05/14/2012

Years ago I saw a segment on the Today show, about cheaper alternatives for acne treatment.
It called for Cetaphil-type cleanser, and using the same for moisturizer if the skin gets too dry.
Using baking soda as a scrub, witch hazel or peroxide as an astringent, and dabbing on milk of magnesia as a mask or spot treatment, and leaving it on overnite.
Acne is a horrible condition, and I hope you get some relief from it!

I receive a very small amount of spending money each week from baby sitting my grandson two days a week. So, every week I put $5.00 of it away. And sometimes more if I make or receive extra money as a gift. It does add up! Then I spend it if I travel somewhere special on vacation or else for Christmas presents.

RE: Using Recycled Paper Vases to Start Plants

By MooseMom 05/14/2012

If the paper vase was made with tape or Elmer's glue, yes you can bury it. Easier paper pots can be made with a sheet of newsprint dampened and folded/crumpled around either a pot or jar or whatever shape you want it. Then fill it with potting soil and start your seeds or cuttings in it. This would definitely be plant-able at the end. You will need to put something under the paper "pot" to catch any drips, and be very careful not to over-water it!

RE: Dog Peeing On Rug

By Lizzyanny 05/14/2012

Look hard at whether you are holding up your responsibilities towards your pet. Is your dog fed and watered on a schedule that encourages her to potty when she is taken outside? Is she taken outside frequently enough? Is she exercized enough that she does not have a lot of nervous energy? Does she have any medical issues tht might interfere with regular elimination (urinary tract infections)?

Perhaps answering these questions will help to determine who needs correction. Smacking your dog will teach her to fear you and not listen to you, and you will be worse off than when your started.

By JazzyMe 05/14/2012

Oh! So cool! I've used it in my much younger days for it's original purpose and never thought of using for crafts. One could even paper mache sculpt with it. It's paint-able, sand-able, and I think it could be used on fabric as an inside substance to firm things up a bit. It will not dry clear. It's sort of like using a thin clay paste.

Check with your library-many hire tutors during the summer to work there, or perhaps you could advertise yourself as a tutor to help kids over the summer who are behind, and use the library as your meeting place.

See if you can do summer work at the park department, daycare center, or zoo or other places that have summer education programs for kids. Check craigslist.org for camps that are hiring help or summer childcare positions.

RE: Garden: Planting In Cinderblocks

By mom-from-missouri 05/14/2012

I have done this off and on for years. My dog loves garlic, and he can't dig up the garlic or other plants that I plant this way. He can get his mouth in the block, but can't open it to pull the plant out! It stops evasive herbs from spreading!

I have surrounded some of my wood raised beds with blocks and it gives extra support to those beds if they are trying to pull apart - helping them to last several years longer.

You do need to water them more often however, as the concrete is porous and absorbs the water.

I have grown herbs in this way for a number of years. Parsley, chives, basil, oregano, cilantro have all done well. Also for decorative purposes, sweet potato vine. I think strawberries would do well too. I think the blocks help hold the water around the roots rather than have it dissipating through the soil and feeding the weeds!

RE: Removing Hair Dye from Skin

By Deeli 05/14/2012

There is a product at beauty supply stores (such as Sally Beauty Supply) you can buy made by Clairol called Clean Touch and it's gentle to the skin. Just follow the directions. In the future carefully spread a very thin layer of Vaseline (or other petroleum jelly brand) along his hairline and on his ears. Be sure not to get the jelly 'on the hair' or the color won't take correctly in those spots.

RE: Repairing a Lace Tablecloth

By frugalsunnie 05/14/2012

Even fabric glue fails, if your friend can filet crochet to patch in where the tears are, that might be the best thing for sturdiness and appearance.

If not-try matching the lace with lace bought at the fabric store or online.

Make patches from the lace, and then attach those patches to the torn spots by sewing machine (satin zig-zag stitch) or hand sewing (buttonhole stitch).

Using a sewing machine will make the tablecloth machine washable on delicate, or whatever laundering method is appropriate to the cloth, but if you are careful so will hand sewing-just make sure you knot your beginning and ending threads.

RE: Plastic Canvas Patterns

By frugalsunnie 05/14/2012

There are several sites online with free needlepoint (called tapestry over here in the UK) patterns, try this one for starters-the guide posts a lot of great info and patterns for plastic canvas, too, and she also posts links to other sources of free patterns on the 'Net:

http://needlepoint.about.com/

Your local library is also a good source for free patterns, look for plastic canvas specific books, but also at needlepoint charts, and even cross-stitch for patterns and inspiration. I've used needlepoint and cross-stich charts for plastic canvas patterns for years:)

RE: Two Methods to Keep Cats Out of Planters

By morninglory 05/14/2012

I don't have a problem with cats in my pots (not yet anyhow), but I do get chipmunks and squirrels. They use the pot to bury their walnuts and seeds. Sometimes they will chew up the plant or bulb I've planted. Infuriating.

I'm not picturing your 2nd suggestion of the garden fencing.

I use plastic rain gutter mesh that I always seem to be able to find at garage sales. I've never bought any from a store. Anyway, this works great. I just cut it to fit whatever pot or area around a plant in the garden and hold it in place with stones (from the driveway, much to my husband's chagrin).

Maybe you could post of photo of the fencing idea so I can see what you mean.
I also get cats using my gardens as their personal litter box, which I think is the height of rudeness and inconsideration by neighbors.

I'd be mortified if my pet ever did this to a neighbor's yard. But that's just me. Guess many folks don't feel this way. Any ideas for keeping cats out of the garden, inexpensively? I think I've tried all the ones I've found on Thriftyfun.
Thanks for your pinecone idea, too.

RE: Tea Tree Oil For Toothaches

By Deeli 05/14/2012

I am so sorry but ingesting tea tree oil can be life threatening (and if it's in your mouth you're bound to swallow some of it) and especially threatening for those who happen to be allergic to it. As Louel53 mentioned use oil of cloves or orajel and as Lilac said you need to get to the dentist asap for tooth pain. I've used oil of cloves in the past for relief until I could get to the dentist and it worked well; you can ask your pharmacist for it.
