In my experience, they get kind of mushy when they're thawed, so not good to use in a recipe that needs fresh, crisp onions. I've had great success in pre-dicing them and then throwing them in the pan to carmelize for use in recipe that calls for that sort of thing (chili, soups, casseroles, etc...).

This spring and summer, I want to really focus on gathering tips and seeds for plants I can grow in my house to have a small fresh garden of herbs and whatever veggies I can easily grow in my home. I am going to have to look at some of these catelouges when I am at your home to help plan it out.

Cecilia, you are a perfect example of why black cats are so amazingly beautiful...They simply rule!!!! Look at that happy expression! You are beautiful Cecilia!
Here is a photo of Jerry, with my Christmas Bells I ordered from Oriental Trading Company this year to give to the kids. Jerry is a frequent poser in my photographs, but prefers to keep his eyes closed even though I do not use flash. LOL He is a stinker, and he too, enjoys watching outdoors!

I have planted tomatos in five gallon buckets with holes punched in the bottom for drainage. I fill them to within about six inches from the top with soil. I use regular black dirt in the bottom half and potting soil in the top half. The reason I use black dirt in the bottom is that is heavier and therefore the buckets aren't as apt to be blown over in a storm or knocked over by some of the overly zealous wild critters around here or by unsupervised little kids, that don't know enough to stay off my patio.

There isn't a lot that can be done, other than carpeting the floors and I imagine that is already done. I have lived in ground floor apartments since 1984, and I don't mind the noise that kids make, near as much as the partys, and extremely loud music that young adults make. Music wouldn't even be so bad, but it is "thump, thump, thump." One apartment that I lived in there was a couple with four kids that ranged in age from baby to about 17 years, and I never heard anything from them, in the way of noise, not even running water or garbage disposal, or anything. A lot depends on how a building is constructed. One thing you can do is make sure your kids don't have a lot of noise-making toys.

Hi and sad to say but there is almost no value to these books.
When I have something like this I usually check on eBay for "like" things to see if anyone has sold anything similar and I check Craigslist for local as shipping (even books) is so expensive.
My daughter uses these in school for her young students scrap booking but not much else because the Internet has everything.
Good luck

My work is with learning disabled adults and Valentine's Day can make them very unhappy. It reminds many of them that they are never likely to have a romantic relationship. If the occasion is mentioned, I make jokes about sending myself cards.
I have been married for 35 years and DH and myself might exchange bargain-priced cards, but nothing more.
Advertising and selling can cause so much misery. Also let us not forget that a huge proportion of the population is single.

Purchase the tea light molds and the wicks especially made for making tea light candles (in the candle making dept.) I melt the wax that has been removed and pour into the tea light molds. Save back some of the wax to add to the tea lights after they have cooled because they will shrink a little in the center. There is no waste of your favorite smelling candles and you get to enjoy them over again.

Not to minimize how it feels to be single when you'd prefer not to be, please try not to assign too much importance to Valentine's Day!
Just keep in mind that Valentine's Day is basically a "Hallmark Holiday," meaning that its original meaning has been blown way out of proportion by companies whose job it is to sell something and convince people that they need to buy it. It's all about making money. Nobody who loves anybody needs a special date assigned to remind one another that they are loved!
Lots of these happy couples you're seeing are just going through the Valentine's Day motions because they think they're supposed to. What really matters isn't what you see on February 14, it's what's going on the other 364 days a year. And while it isn't easy being alone, it's better than being with the wrong person! Hoping you meet the right one very soon!

Any paint labelled as satisfactory for use on masonry or cement should work on brick. Make sure you use a good quality primer also labelled for use on masonry because the material is usually porous even if it's been exposed to weather. Not always, but why take the chance of your mural not looking right because of uneven paint absorption?
Read the labels and follow the directions to ensure your finished project is everything you want it to be-use the right paint for the conditions the mural will be under after the painting is done. There is a primer and paint for interior OR exterior masonry and using the wrong ones will ruin your project.

I go to thrift stores for my dog toys, too. I make sure there aren't any 'beans' in the bottom of them as well. I bought a big floppy stuffed duck once, not realizing it had one of those press button noise makers in the foot. I kept hearing 'quack quack quack' and was actually looking out the window for ducks when my dog Rusty Girl first discovered it. She will sit and munch on the noisemaker until it drives me crazy and I have to take it away. I put it up for awhile, then bury it in the bottom of the toy box when she isn't looking. She always finds it after a few days!

Google the manufacturer to find the website (look on the box, sometimes they print their URL on the box) and then use their search feature to find your manual. Most manufacturers will charge you for a printed copy, or offer you a free download.

I made my bread yesterday from the Gluten Free Bread Mix I told you about. The recipe makes 24 muffins. I bake them for 12 minutes at the temperature in the package instructions.
I have made this bread so many times, I don't read the instructions anymore and twice, including yesterday, I mixed it up and put it in the muffin tins to rise and then realized that I didn't get the yeast out of the box. Each time, I just dumped it all back in the mixing bowl and stirred in the yeast. Came out good both times. I don't think you can mess up making this bread.

I find that mopping with vinegar and water or steam cleaning works very well, but the floor must be thoroughly dried or it will be streaky. I tie a towel to my dust mop and dry each section as I clean it. Seems like a lot of work, but it's worth it and I only have to do it about three or four times a year.

I have made these with 33 rpm and 45 rpm records; they make great bowls for chip and dip and other uses. I made ice cream sundae bouquets (with flowers) in plastic parfait glasses and set them on these record bowls; it was a cute addition to a birthday party; each child received an ice cream sundae bouquet.
You can also use the same method with scratched CD's or DVD's.

You can buy some ear wash at the vets office. They charged me $16. Then you pour it into the ear canal. Quite a bit, and let your dog shake it's head. That shakes out the dirt. Then using a cotton ball, stick you finger into the ear and wipe out what is there. Some dogs, depending on the breed, need further attention. They produce allot of ear wax and have excessive hair growth. The hair must be removed. My dog isn't one of those so I really haven't had to go any further then what I told you. I know one of those kinds of dogs is an Old English Sheepdog. My sister has one. You might want to ask your vet if you feel uncomfortable doing this.

The best and safest place to find this answer is to call two or three laminate flooring companies. Using anything other than what they recommend can harm the floors over time and will void the flooring warranty. One of the products not recommended for some laminates is mop and glow. I've had laminate flooring in the past and one of the recommended safe solutions is the vinegar and water suggested by another poster here.

You should be able to just draw the letters. If you draw them yourself, just tape two or three pieces of paper together and you will have a decent size to work with. When you draw them yourself you can make them any style that you want.
Also you could go to the library and look for a book that might have different styles of letters in it. Back in the seventies when we bought our house, we had wanted to have the house number spelled out instead of just the numbers and the people next door spelled the number out on their house while we were in the process of moving in, so that meant we couldn't go and purchase the letters, because they would look the same as the neighbors.
So I went to the library and found a book with all different types of letters in it, so I picked out letters that looked kind of oriental and drew them on paper in the required size and my husband cut them out and painted them black and fastened them to the front of the house. That way we had the number spelled out, but it was at all like the neighbors.

Do you live in an area where the tap water it treated with chlorine and/or flouride? If so, your dog might not like the smell of these chemicals. You could try buying a gallon of bottled water that has absolutely no chemicals in it and see if he likes that better.

Whenever I started feeling stressed out I pick a movie from our collection that is very riveting (for me it's a good disaster movie) and pick up my yarn and crochet hook. Between the movie and the crocheting, it takes my mind off of whatever was stressing me out and I'm able to relax and enjoy the movie and the crocheting, which is my favorite hobby.
Another thing that helps is that my dogs both come and lay close to me. If I'm on the couch they will come and lay next to me. Having them close never fails to settle me down.

First of all thank you everyone for your ideas and concern.
It's not a issue of location or freshness. Have tried many locations/different bowls/bottled water/ice cubes. I put a cup of water in with her food (right now cooked rice, lean chicken and some canned food) and she laps it up to get to the food but she is NOT happy about the water. Will take a few drinks then picks her head up and continues "lapping" a few times and then takes some more and so on till she gets to the food. It's as if she is tasting something she is unsure of or perhaps the actual lapping action feel wrong to her.
Her tongue looks fine. She is, and has been under the care of a vet since she started this and has had fluids given by the vet, but he is at a loss as to why she won't drink. Our next step is an MRI to see if this is neurological, but I was hoping not to put my 12 year old girl through that. Just looking for any other possibilities.

This is the best and most inexpensive way to organise the pantry shelves I've seen yet. So many of the organisation sites seem to want you to spend lots of money on organising systems-how is that thrifty?!
But this one uses what most of us already have on hand-it's easy to raise a pre-existing shelf so that it slopes forward (use wedges at the back under the support) and the stop at the front can be made with stuff lying around the shed or garage.
Thank-you Thrifty Tips for bringing this great tip back!

The above will work fine (the bag with vinegar) if you have just a slight clog but if you have a more severe clog (as I had and thought I was going to have to call a plumber and replace the whole system). Try the below method
unscrew the shower head, it really isn't hard to do. Set the head in a bowl of vinegar to remove the deposits.
Check all filters clean with old toothbrush use same brush to clean both the inside of the shower head and the shower pipe with either the vinegar or lime away- which works very good with deeply clogged shower heads as it breaks down the lime and calcium deposits . You may have to soak the shower head for a few hours or overnight (as I had to do), depending on how clogged they are. This will take time and a little effort but the results are awesome and so inexpensive. It saved me so much money with such little effort and time.

Hi, They were called weather pets or barometer pets. They were painted with mercury, which was what made them change color. Mercury was banned in the US in the '90s and so, consequently, were these figurines. I have seen them on Ebay, but they no longer change color because with age the paint wore off and you were just left with a white figurine. Here is one I found on Ebay today:

Formby's product line of furniture refinishing products sells a product called,"White Ring Remover". That is sold in any paint department that carries the Formby's product line.
You can also use some Vaseline Petroleum Jelly and ashes from a cigarette or wood ashes from a fireplace. The ashes are a very, very fine abraisive and the petroleum is a wood conditioner. Put some over the ring, using your finger rub well into the ring. Let set about fifteen mins. then wipe off.
Either one will take the ring out .

Yes, your dog might have been frightened when she was tiny and is afraid to drink water because of the area the bowl is in, the bowl it's self, the smell of the bowl, who knows what they remember. Try a new bowl and put it in a new area. You might try putting a few cubes of ice in the water. Do not give her anything else to drink what so ever and if she is still not drinking water, a trip to the vet is in order. Just to let you know how silly some dogs can get, my sister's little dog saw a lizard by her drinking bowl and ever since would never eat or drink from that area again.

I have a fireplace hearth made of the same thing. They do make products to clean and polish granite now a days, but I have never tried them. They weren't around forty years ago when we moved into this house. I have always used warm water and a mild dish soap then, went back over it using a clean cloth and Lemon Oil. I let the Lemon Oil penitrate the surface for about 20 mins or so, then re-wipe with another clean soft cloth. That really does the trick to make the hearth look spanking new. I also use Lemon Oil on my kitchen formica counters, and Mom's fifty year old black stove. I do the stove every single day and it also looks spanking new.

Our Shiztzuh is very picky about drinking and eating too. She refused to drink out of her bowl after another dog drank out of it. We have tried using different bowls, even a Cool-Whip bowl and she is better about drinking. Make sure you give her fresh water often too. Try putting the bowl in a different place. Our dog seemed to be afraid of the corner where her bowl was previously, so we moved it to another spot and she will drink.

We have a beagle that acts the same way. She doesn't like baths and bites us when we try to cut her nails. We have had success when we take our time giving her a bath. If you can get the edges stuck back down so that they stay, go to your home improvement store and ask for advice for refinishing the counter tops. Just to add a note on age. I think whatever age you see fit is a good age to begin. If you feel that they're too young it wouldn't hurt to wait a couple of years. One factor to consider might be how much a computer is used at home. If it's something that you make regular use of it might make sense to start your children learning computer skills sooner rather than later. Also, if they have friends who use a computer you'd want to make sure they know how to use one safely.

I hate chapped lips, it always makes me bite my lips which ends up making it worse.
When I have chapped lips, I exfoliate by either using a toothbrush or a small amount of regular sugar lightly rub it across lips. Then I put my favorite lip butter by Korres USA (dot com) which is all natural. Burt's Bee's is great as well.
Even if you don't have a lip balm, little olive oil or hand lotion (in a pinch) will do.
IMO, I don't advise using a nail file. The skin on your lips is thin and you don't want to accidentally remove too much with something as harsh as a nail file.

I remember using a computer from a very early age (my Dad was a computer geek way back before most people had a PC!), although internet access was very different then. What I do remember him teaching me were basic computing skills, which in today's world would probably be using a mouse and things like that. At that young age I think seperating "computer" and "internet" would be appropriate. You wouldn't want to turn them loose on it, if nothing else for the damage they might do to the machine!
But basic educational software and games could help a young child become familiar with the mechanics of using a computer. As they get older lessons in internet safety can come into play. Our daughter hasn't reached that age yet but I think that's how we'll go about it. She sees mummy and daddy using the computer and is curious about it already!

My 3 year old doesn't "do school" yet but watches educational videos, ie Sid the Science Kid, Leap Frog, Sesame Street, etc while his sissy does her schoolwork. Every once in a while he will practice some shapes on a dry erase book we were given.
As for the outline it says the equivalent of what they would learn in public school in regards to language arts, math, and the like. It says nothing about computer. I also believe that this age is much too young to be on the computer, but know parents that allow their loss younger than mine on theirs as well as knowing preschools that have computers for their kids in classrooms, and all the new "preschool computer programs" that are out there now.
I was just hoping for another's opinion on the issue or to know if I'm just being overprotective about it.

Linda,I am so thankful you have the cats to help you through the tough days! Animals can be such a comfort. I will be praying that you have a successful recovery. My papillion is so much company to me as I have so many complications from diabetes, including neuropathy, both hands and feet. I want a cat, too, but don't know how my pup would handle it, nor me as they require much more work that a dog. Let us hear from you again soon!

Wash him, then sniff him. It may be a bad infection or gum disease. You never know what fur hides; he could've gotten into anything or hurt himself. You didn't say what he smelled like. lol

Here's an idea that might work: Get some of the tacky rubber stuff for hanging things up (one brand name is FunTack) and put a small ball on each lid & stick it to the inside of a cabinet door. When you use the lid, leave the ball of tacky rubber on the door for when you store the lid again.
I have all kinds of things stuck on the backs of my cabinet doors with either FunTack or magnets - such as small juice powder packets, sweetener packets, charts of substitutions, a chart of pan sizes and how much they hold, directions for cooking rice and pastas, etc. This keeps everything handy & easy to find.
I also use some in the bathroom on the back of the medicine cabinet door (for the kind that swings out, not sliders) and linen cupboard, for sample packets of pills, shampoo, a first aid chart, etc.

I've seen laptops twelve years ago that had web cameras on them. It is just what has been optioned on the computer when it was purchased. Maybe more come standard with them now.
HP makes printers now that I think print from internet-enabled mobile devices. http://www.hp.com/go/eprintbanner
The last computer I purchased was from the City auction for $20.00. I use a similar computer that I purchased in parts. I do not see myself shelling out the money for an iPad anytime soon.

I've tried this a couple times and can't seem to get it to lie flat. It wants to "cup" up. Do you have any suggestions to remedy this problem? Yours is beautiful.
