If I remember correctly, some time ago, and probably several times over, Family Fun magazine had a simple lion's costume. Of course, each year at Halloween, they would show new costumes. I bet if you went to the Family Fun website, you would find a link to a ton of costumes and how to make. Good luck!

Tan colored clothes.
Fake fur around the head to create mane.
Whiskers: Pipe cleaners or something similar
Fake teeth to create fangs!
Tail - piece of fabric with little patch of fake fur at end

I would find a nice pajama sleeper in the general color of a lion and match this with fabric to create the lion's mane. Use a "bonnet" pattern to make a bonnet. Improvise some ears. Make the make from zillions of curls either of ribbon or fabric that you can coax into a curl Or a zillion pipe cleaners twisted into curls.
