Child's Cherry Costume?

January 14, 2010

For a fancy dress competition a small 3 year old child needs to dress as a cherry. I thought, maybe I could make the costume with some kind of paper or cardboard, or something else. Does anyone have any ideas?

I have not made kids' costumes for a long time but we had a children's ballet company and used to use a lot of crepe paper to make costumes. It comes in a zillion colors - like cherry red! - and you can sew it! Try sewing several widths together, leaving slits for arm-holes, gathering it at the neck and below the hips with a drawstring you can tie and untie, and stuffing it (after it's on) with either more crepe paper, tissue or even newspaper till it's full and round. You could make an inner layer of crepe paper next to your 3 year old so the 'stuffing' doesn't get scratchy. Then make a green leaf crepe paper hat and green tights for 'stems'. You should be able to get crepe paper at any party store. Good luck! -- cateyes

Couldn't you make a giant fabric Yo-Yo "skirt" and stuff her into it with a green top/blouse and big green bow for her hair? Use some sparkle on her cheeks, and be sure you stitch a white shine mark on the cherry skirt.

You could probably find a Yo-Yo pattern on the web. They use them to make pot holders and decorative pillow tops.
Just stitch-hem the bottom of it so it gathers close to her legs and stitch the top high up on the blouse, like an empire waist band.
Stuff the "skirt" with plastic shopping bags or crepe or tissue paper.

What about getting one of those big exercise balls, and cutting holes for arms and legs, and then covering it with red fabric. Make a stem and a leaf out of craft foam. Good luck.

I did this! it was a costume for Halloween for my granddaughter a couple of years ago! you'll need --a can of red spray paint for plastic, clear(or white)plastic bag that will fit over child's body. (Bag with drawstring top will work best) and some newspaper for stuffing, small stick, and cool whip bowl that fits child's head.

Put hole, just big enough for stick to fit through, into bowl bottom.

Hold bag up to child, and mark areas to cut openings for arms and legs. (Be sure bag top is below chin.) Cut openings.
In ventilated area, spray paint bag and bowl until desired color-will probably need 2-3 coats. When dry, child can step into bag, putting arms and legs into appropriate openings. Stuff with paper until look is right. Tie drawstring loosely above shoulders.

Insert stick into bowl, through inside, leaving 4-5 inches sticking out for stem. Cut off any extra inside bowl, and cover with tape so it doesn't poke child's head. Now you have a cherry with a stem! Good luck!
