Oh, I used to dave my recycling for when I needed the extra cash to put in my gas tank!
GO TO YARD SALES OR THRIFT SHOPS THATS WHAT I DO. I ALSO TAKE MY KIDS PANTS THAT HAVE HOLES IN THE KNEES AND CUT THEM OFF FOR SHORTS, AND THE LONG SLEEVE SHIRTS AND CUT OFF THE SLEEVES AND MAKE SHORT SLEEVE THIS WAY THE KIDS HAVE PLAY CLOTHES
My Rule for me is :
Use it up
wear it out
make it do
or do with out, then money not as tight
"If you can't make a buck save a buck" that's what I say. I am a stay at home mom of 5 and my husbands paycheck only goes so far. I make everything from scratch from laundry soap, to dog and cat food, to cookies and pies Everything! I go to recipegoldmine.com they have a recipe for everything, I can wash 24+ loads of laundry for 69 cents by making my own laundry soap. I also never buy anything unless it's on sale or I have a coupon, everything goes on sale eventually and I just do without till it does. Also I say to find a food pantry in your area. I go to one once a week and I get alot of great stuff, anything I don't use I get a box together and give it to a friend of mine with 4 kids so the food really goes a long way. Just use your imagination and don't be proud and Have Fun!
We eat a lot of pasta. Sometimes with spaghetti sauce. You can use canned baby clams. Or just butter and garlic salt. You can also have pasta or noodles, add chicken or turkey gravy (Jar or can) and add a can or two of tuna. All these except butter do not need refrigaration until cooked.
We also get a bag of boneless chicken breast. You can cook one or two at a time. Have one hot and make the other one chicken salad.
I also like to make two meals at once, the entre' anyway and freeze one. I don't do too much of that. I dont want freezer burn.
also try to cook on the grill once a week or so. not only does the food taste better but it doesn't heat up your home either
What an excellent article. Thank you. As you said not everything will work for everybody. For instance I don't drive, and don't have a car (nor a loving partner with one) so buying things in bulk doesnt work for me owing to the sheer impractability of getting loads of things home. Nor do I have a freezer, and 'cent's off' coupons are not at all widely used here (Australia) as they are in other countries.
Okay.. that ;s the negative, the positive is as you said, there are still things we can do to save. One is, don't be proud! If someone asks you if you would like something (and you genuinely need it) say Yes.. I obtained for free a perfectly good pair of blankets and a set of white pine shelves (which I use as a book case) from a neighbour who was just going to junk them. Guess she was buying new stuff.
Further down the street from me is an elderly man who every now and then puts six or so lemons out on his brick gate post for anyone to take. So I do. Not all of them, that maybe would deprive others, but I take two or three of them.
I only wash in COLD water, never hot.. my clothes are perfectly clean. I put all my loose change away in a savings box.. I know this is an old one.. but it adds up and is very handy if there's a smallish emergency.
I live alone, so I eat very simply, eggs, potatoes, sardines, tuna, Very little meat (and meat is really-but really-- expensive here now.
So just a few more tips I guess.
Ellie.
Swallow your pride and go thrift shopping! One year I found a half of a rack in jeans in my daughter's size; many were BRAND NEW overstock from a department store. After I got them home and washed them, my daughter found 5 dollars in one pocket.
I echo the previous feedback - fabulous article!!
Additional savings:
1. Use the library for books, movies & music.
2. Petroleum jelly makes a great lip balm. Olive oil is a good moisturizer.
3. Clean with ammonia, vinegar, baking soda, etc. instead of expensive cleaners.
Thanks for the great article. I work for an organization that assists people who are financially challenged to get their lives and finances back on track. Great tips.
