This photo is of a momma red-headed wood duck with her 10 babies taking a rest on a log right in front of my deck. What a beautiful sight to start the day. The river flows right through our front yard and we see lots of geese and other critters including a beaver.

Independence Day Gloriosa DaisiesThese gloriosa daisies are 3 feet high and began blooming early in June and are still in full bloom. Gloriosas bloom all summer and love the sun to part shade. I called this photo Independence Day Gloriosa Daisies, since decorations are up for the 4th of July.

Raindrops On Commander in Chief...These Commander in Chief liliums bloomed the last of June through early July. These lilies get about 2 feet high and are very easy to care for. This photo was taken after a rain shower. The drops on the lilies make them look even prettier!

Should Floating Seeds Be Saved?
Should Floating Seeds Be Saved?I have read many articles on saving seed. In most all cases, when cleaning and saving seed from pulpy fruit you scoop the seed from the fruit, remove as much pulp as possible, then place seed in a bowl of water. Advice is given to skim off all floating seed and discard as they will not produce plants.

Wood Ashes for WatermelonsI have several old maple trees on my property. I'll hate to see them go. They are a comfort to me. Being old they drop lots of twigs. I was recycling the branches and twigs on the street until I realized wood ash could help with blossom end rot; they now have a purpose.

Hibiscus SyriacusThis picture is all I have left of one of my favorite hibiscus. I'm sorry to say I lost it two winters ago. I rooted a cutting from a neighbors bush. The neighbor has since cut down the bush.

NicotianaThis nicotiana plant is in its third year now, probably because we have had such mild winters recently. It is related to the tobacco plant which you can probably guess by its name. It is right by our back door and the scent it gives off in the evening when the flowers start to open is magnificent.

Moonflower Vine In TreesI was thinking an alternative title for this piece might be: Can You Bottle This Stuff? I believe it's essence would make an interesting perfume. It would have to be 'cleaned up' a bit, though. It is nice and heady, but muddled.

Arizona SunflowersI tried to grow these 20 years ago, but a big storm took them away. Now I have been growing the biggest I have ever seen for the last two years. I love watching them grow; it is fabulous.

Do Different Vegetables "Cross"?Planting squash near cucumbers will not cause them to cross pollinate or taste differently than they should. Even though they are in the same family, Cucurbitaceae, I'm not sure a professional breeder could successfully cross them in a lab.

Robbie's Home in the PetuniasMy front lawn is a mess. I hauled in soil to level and raise it, so as to better tie it in with my adjoining vacant field. So, is there a real point of interest in this 'work in progress'? Yes. I didn't plant those scraggly petunias in the near corner. They are volunteers. Could they be hiding something? You betcha!
