Cleaning Wooden Deck Cracks?
I would clean the cracks,as best as I could,with a garden hose and a stiff bristled brush-an old broom works well-You dont want cracks between the deck boards.[expansion/contraction pulls the nails loose]

Take the vents off,or tape around them.Painting them will hurt nothing...just make sure theyre good and dry.[sorry i forgot]
