Baked SauerkrautI'm not usually a fan of sauerkraut, but this is really very good! I like the combination of other ingredients. They blend well and make the taste of the sauerkraut not seem quite so strong.

Earth Day Wreath

Earth Day Wreath From Recycled MaterialsMy three kids worked on this recycled Earth Day wreath. We used cardboard from a cereal box for the base (cut in a circle and taped together). They all enjoyed gluing on the packing peanuts. I used a grocery bag for the bow.

angel trumpet bush

Angel Trumpet BushThis is a angel trumpet bush, it blooms from July to here it is in late October. Don't know how long it will bloom. Last year it was in late November. The smell from this plant is wonderful. The plant, if eaten, is highly poisonous. So you need to keep kids and pets away.

Hands with pruning shears cutting back plant.

Cutting Back Perennials in the FallCleaning up the garden in the fall can be a bit confusing, especially when it comes to cutting back perennials. Should you leave them alone or cut them back as soon as they fade? The answer, of course, depends on the plant.

Use Netting to Collect LintSo you left a tissue in your shirt or pants pocket and now your "dark load" is covered with bits of white; even happens with light colored loads, but never fear. Buy a yard each of light and dark netting, the cheap stuff, NOT nice tulle. Unfold and toss the appropriate shade in the dryer with your bespeckled load of laundry. It works! Use and reuse the net until it gets soft, then replace with new, stiff net. Give the "old net" to your kids or grand kids for play.

Using Inexpensive Cleaning Products to Save MoneyYou can use a few basics for cleaning. White Vinegar is a good streak free cleaner. I use it for a LOT. If you use it full strength for a really dirty job, test the surface in a small area first. Vinegar is basically an acid.

A Penny Saved is a Penny EarnedBenjamin Franklin said, "A penny saved is a penny earned." I say a dollar saved is more than a dollar earned because it generates interest and you don't need to pay taxes on it.

Use What You Have: Mac and Cheese Without a Pan or ColanderThis happened to me and my friend while camping and thought I would pass it along. We had decided to go camping and packed everything we thought we would be needing only to discover when we went to make macaroni and cheese for dinner the first night, we had no pan to cook the macaroni in and no colander to strain said macaroni.

Use Recycled Gatorade Bottles in Packed LunchesI finally found a reusable plastic bottle that you can pack in a lunch that won't leak. I washed our used Gatorade bottles by hand and filled them with water. (My son adds powdered drink mix.) You can tip them any which way and they don't leak.

Microwave Dinner for OneThis isn't exactly a recipe but I like to make my own microwave dinners. I boil a packet of mini carrots, fry a panful of onions, mushrooms, peppers, etc. Flash freeze each vegetable in ice cube containers. Put into separate Rubbermaid boxes and keep in the freezer.

Check Date on "New" TiresWhen we go to a store to buy tires, we think we are buying new ones, right? We may not be. As it turns out the date the tire is manufactured is on the inside part of the tire.
