Every year before garage sale season starts, I make a list of items I need for around the house or personal items I'm interested in finding. That way I have a "road map" for the season.
I love garage sales, but I also like saving my money on junk. I always take my iced water along for days when the weather forecast calls for hot, humid weather. It is also good to keep a tape measure and bungee ties in the car for measuring items and hauling them away.
Show Up REALLY Early at Garage Sales
This is a tip for all those garage sale fiends out there. Everyone knows that the first person at the garage sale gets the best pick of items. Instead of trying to get up early to be the first at garage sales, I have started looking through Craigslist and the local paper for advertised sales. I then show up the night before the sale.
Buying Furniture at Yard Sales
When looking for gently used furniture, go to yard sales early in the morning on Saturdays. You will usually find more of what you are looking for and at bargain prices. Also not all yard sales are located in the paper.
Ask for What You Are Looking for at Garage Sales
When you are looking for something in particular at yard sales and don't see it, just ask. I have found that sellers are "motivated to sell" once they have started and will sometimes go into the house and bring out the item you are looking for.
