I do this too! I actually have another color bath towel just for that purpose! I lay one down before shower or my sons bath and pick it up when we are finished, then if he splashed extra water out I can dry the floor quickly too.

If you are planning to shut down the water you will need to bleed the water out too. Meaning clear the pipes of all traces of water. Also to prevent freezing drain pipes, anti freeze works well for that.
