Caramel Delights

Ingredients

  • 32 caramels
  • 5 Tbsp. cream of evaporated milk
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup sifted flour
  • 1 cup quick oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (opt.)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

Melt caramels with cream in double boiler. Cream together sugar and shortening. Sift together soda, salt, and flour. Mix into creamed mixture. Add oatmeal and mix well.

Pat half this mixture into a baking pan and bake at 350 degrees F (preheated) for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and cool for a few minutes. Spread caramel mixture over baked layer. Sprinkle on nuts and chocolate bits. Then sprinkle remaining crumb mixture over all. Return to 350 degree F oven for 15-20 minutes. Cut in squares or bars while still warm.
