I have new boots and want to 'spit shine' them as my late husband always did. Suggestions and thanks.

I have to dress up for work, but don't have a lot of money to spend on shoes/clothing so it pays to buy well and take care of it!
Leather shoes should be polished (a lost art). Don't use the "dab on" liquid polish-use the wax. It preserves and cleans the leather. It also conditions it so it won't "crack". I stuff mine with newspaper after wearing them, it absorbs all the moisture that can deteriorate the shoe. There aredrying inserts you can buy at specialty stores but newspaper works well and it's much less costly. (It also helps keep the "shape")
For suede shoes make sure before you wear them the first time you treat the suede and by all means KEEP IT DRY.
Find a good cobbler in your area (yes they still exist). If you get scuffs or scrapes on a good pair of shoes, take them in. Often they can be repaired to look like new.

I drive with my dress shoes on but have always placed a thick towel on the car mat and the heels never get scuffed.

To save dollars and wear on shoes, never drive in your "good" shoes. It makes the backs wear out too soon. Drive in old shoes and change when you reach your destination.
