I had a big sign which stated "Winterland Workout". I placed different workout machines - rowing machine, bicycle etc. and dressed the people using them in red and green. Ours was a night parade, so we put lights on all the equipment. It was a great float and we won first. They'd covered a big box (refrigerator size) with solid wrapping paper, had a kooky looking "Dr." This was his "time machine. In one side, send in an overweight lady, & out the other side send out a shapely woman. It was a big hit! They made their point!
