Tip: Homemade Panko Breadcrumbs

I had never used panko. I bought a can out of curiosity. I thought it was OK, but I also thought I could do better. I did do better. This homemade panko made with fresh baked French bread is far better than what you buy after it sits on a shelf for who knows how long.

Cold Brewed Coffee

Cold Brewed CoffeeThis coffee is mellower and less acid than hot brewed. You don't need a special machine to make it. Mix 1 ounce (a little less than 3 tsp.) coarsely ground coffee beans with 8 ounces cold water in an airtight container like a mason jar. Refrigerate 12 to 24 hours. Strain through a filter and drink hot or iced. Compost the filter and grinds.

Easy Butternut SquashInstead of wasting cooking energy in a stove, simply cut your butternut squash in half. I use an electric knife since they can be tough to cut, and placed them into my large slow cooker (crockpot). You may or may not scoop out the seeds first if you wish.

Freezing FigsWhen I was growing up, I spent a lot of time over at Grandma's house which was across the road and up a long lane. In August, you could find me up the fig tree munching on some of the best brown figs I have ever tasted. I would eat and eat until my belly was full. I still love figs.

Freezing String BeansIn the past, I only canned string beans until I found that they are also good frozen. The taste and texture is different but they are really good sauted in a little olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Preventing SpillsFor containers that may be hard to open, I cover them with Saran Wrap before placing the lid. This will help prevent spills when you go to open the container. This works for soups also.

DIY Lemon Juice DispenserI like to use the dispenser from my oil/vinegar bottle pourer to help get lemon juice out of my lemons. First, I roll the lemon around on the table using my hand with firm pressure in order to loosen up all the juices. Then I poke it and insert the dispenser. Squeeze the lemon and all this juice will come out, minus the pulp and seeds.

Bread Heel SandwichMany people don't use the ends of bread in their sandwiches. If you put the heel on the inside, you can make an excellent sandwich. Some people fool their children this way, but this tip never worked with mine. I do this for myself. Prior to this, I used the ends for croutons and bread crumbs.

Add Butternut Squash to Frozen DinnersButternut squash is one of my favorites. I like to buy the ones you steam in the microwave, since they come in small packages. The other day, I was eating a small dinner, the type that comes in small packages, and I decided to scatter some of the butternut squash on top of the spaghetti.

Peeling Hard Boiled Eggs in a JarThis is guaranteed to work. After eggs are hard boiled, take a pint canning jar. Wide mouth works great, but regular will work as well. Put about 2 inches of water in the jar. Insert 1 egg at a time, add the lid and shake it vigorously. Take the egg out, shell and skin come off like magic. Continue with the rest of the eggs. No need to change the water unless you have a bunch or need to add water.
